Just from past experience when some hit me and caused what appeared to be minor damage at least tell your insurance what has happened. Mine turned out to be quite a lot more than both party's thought and the insurance claim was difficult claiming a week after the incident. For example the 3rd party insurance instigated I caused more damage driving it around after the bump. Even if you don't claim they know when and what happened.

Take the car to the garage and get it checked out. I was read ended and thought there was nothing wrong with my car until the guy at the garage lifted the cover to the spare wheel. Get a quote, then decide whether to go through the insurance

It won't effect your insurance/ncb if you are claiming off someone.

somebody went into the back of me whilst i was stationary with my children in our last car. i could see little damage to my car so said we could sort it out privately but the lady who drove into me decided to go through her insurance anyway. as for the car it needed more than we realised and we had all the work done at audi on her insurance.. i have learnt its best to go through their insurance if its their fault as you never really know what wrong with the car!

My wife reversed into a car, when she was trying to get out of the way of an approaching ambulance on blues and twos;the other party was very understanding, and went to get the damage valued. The car was inspected, and the estimate was a couple of hundred quid. It was cheaper to pay that than to go through insurance. It was quicker for them too, as they could just get the garage they wanted, to do the work, at their convenience. I would get a quote, and then give them the option.
It probably won't affect your ncd, but upon renewing, you are always asked, "have you had any claims in the last...."- I often wonder whether the price is put up regardless of blame.

Definitely. Insurance companies will do anything to screw you over.

Slightly different, but two years ago a woman drove into my car while I was parked up waiting for my wife to return. She happened to be with the same insurance company as me. Because it was entirely her fault, I used Audi's own insurance claim system which allowed me to avoid going through my own insurance. After she had informed the insurance company of the accident, they contacted me to see if I was going to claim. I explained the route I was going to take and that was that. My renewal, although I hadn't even contacted the insurance company myself, rocketed!

Inspect the car properly, remove the bumper etc.. As soon as you involve the insurers they will take their pound of flesh regardless of them actually needing to do something or not.
