Going back to the Scottish reaction - i've also stumbled across a great number of Celtic supporters whom are justifying their celebrations due to 'what she did to OUR country'.

These are the same folk who for the rest of the time brag about their 'Irish roots', generally consider themselves to be Irish, wave tricolours and best of all............. sing songs glorifying terrorist groups and attacks on 'our' country.

Folk who sing 'ooh ah up the ra', getting on their high horse about the damage Thatcher has done to 'their' country?!? You couldnt make it up.

You're right, albeit slightly out on the timing. The unburied dead and uncollected rubbish were a feature of the Winter of Discontent (1978/79) immediately before her first election victory. However, the three-day week and power cuts date back to much earlier in the 1970s, when Ted Heath was prime minister.

End of the day she was in a job filled with controvesy , I was brought up by my peers to hate her,i listened to the rants on both sides but i have to say she never bothered me or my life....
She has died, a frail old woman, she is someones mother, and it would be hard for them to swallow people celebrating her death....they should have more respect...IMO, you can only hurt the living...

The post is not about Scargill, its about Thatcher. She was hell bent on beating the Miners and very cleverly manouvered Scargill into calling a strike. He was an egotistic maniac who wasn't much of a tactician. She was an egotistic maniac who had the might of a government to ensure she won at all costs. The huge coal stocks was brought about from buying cheap coal from god knows where at cheap subsidised costs, designed to undercut the British mined coal and make the industry look worse than it should. She played Scargill like a puppet and then his crazed rants did the rest. You forget we were on strike for our jobs, nothing else. My Grandad worked down the mines, my dad did and my brother along with me for 15 years.
Thatcher didn't make Britain great, she raped it by selling off everything she could to get short term results. Generations of miners made this country great, mining coal in horrible conditions that usually shortehed their lives, to ensure this counties wealth grew and our ability to manufature, steel etc and generate industry.

As for you comments about sharing your food with starving families, i never saw that. I did however see highly paid police on open checkbook overtime rates gladly waving their pay packets infront of striking miners who were out of work for a full year in some case's.

To all that threw in funny comments, yes i enjoy a laugh with most, banter is what i live on if truth be known, but sometimes it doesn't always carry through on written format.

The OP was announcing Thatcher is dead, and my view is good riddance. I believe because of my roots and deep involvement during the strike that i have the right to air my view. Its my view and i'll stick to it thanks

@Mr Freeze. What I saw was people not only fighting for thier jobs, but the whole community.I saw many villages like ghost towns. And yes, i did see some coppers waving cash around....you will find that they were Met officers, who shamed every other officer from every other force there.Im still embarassed at the thought of it.

Like you say, neither of us knows one way or t'other. Anyway, no need to fall out over Mrs T; we'll have plenty of opportunity to do that next season when our teams play each other in the Championship!

Yes I am a Celtic supporter, from an Irish/Polish background, but I am also a proud Scot who has never waved a tricolour or sang any songs glorifying any terrorist group or activities, like many of my fellow fans.
I purely follow the football, leaving politics for another time.

It sure does and if you want an excellent read to help understand why I suggest this book from last year being reviewed here:

The Righteous Mind: Why good people are divided by politics and religion
The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt – review | Books | The Observer

I've read this thread with interest and I'm sure the author Jonathan Haidt would say, 'look that's what I mean' - these are all good people but we all tend to think our view is right. The right thinks traditional values, authority and sets of rules will make the world right. The left (liberals as he calls them in this book) thinks it pretty much all about creating fairness and compassion for those who can't.

Too much right and you end up in survival of the fittest, too much left and you end up with everyone being equal (I think they tried that one, Comrade...) rather than respected for their differences. He describes us as individuals as much the same too, 90% monkey (wanting to win for ourselves) and 10% bee with concern for the hive or society. His book has made a few politicians think more deeply about their actions.

I'm glad we live in a country with enough checks and balances to prevent either view becoming dominant. Maggie did what she did with popular support and when she did eventually go too far she lost that support, it's just a shame politics remains a zero sum game where one side has to win (Parliament and particularly PM's questions is exactly the way not to communicate with others!) and doesn't allow for the more sensible middle way between the two to be reached, which I'm glad to say hasn't been the case on here with people from both sides extending the olive branch.

Cheers robbie, sadly I sometimes have to work with various elected peoples around the world and I'm afraid I just don't have the massive ego required for the job!

Oh and Chancellor, you must be kidding after your performance on here. I'd make you foreign minister and together we would restore the Empire. Anyone got a spare hoodie I can borrow? [Star Wars reference from robbies sig pic and other threads anyone confused]

Rumour is she will be buried / dropped into a disused Yorkshire mine shaft next Wednesday.
Once done, they are installing a toilet at the head and charging punters £5 a sh*t with all contributions going towards our national debt.
The debt is expected to be cleared sometime Friday lunchtime!!

she has gone and that is that!
there are working clubs around here that are actually throwing parties on her funeral day, in celebration to mark the damage she caused to the coal mining villages up this way!
she was ruthless in her decisions and terrible!
her name alive never mind dead was and always will be met with fierce anger up here!
so cast your minds back to exactly when she was in power to just realise the damage this out of touch woman caused to the north of england, never mind ireland, and take a reality check!
she wont be missed these parts!
she even died in a 5 star hotel that probably we, the tax payer were paying for!
    adios i say!

Glad you see the irony. For any truly determined socialist Vauxhall and Ford still make cars and social housing is in abundance if they really want to live the 70's and 80's 'dream' . I grew up then and the UK was a dim, grey and dire place to live in. I for one much prefer today, I don't think I'm alone.

As for the rich get richer etc unfortunately statistics show this isn't the case. However you want to measure life satisfaction - through median income, life expectancy, years of healthy life they have all increased markedly since the late 70's. We also live in one of the safest countries in the world. Oddly we are no happier because 'having it all' in terms of material goods isn't the source of happiness.

I'd also say rather than the rich get richer, we now live in a country where education is available to all and hard work is enough, the class you were born into no longer determines your path in life, it's mostly up to you and your own application.

Gary's probably in his teens early twenties at best......... you've fallen into the socialist stereotypical upbringing you had which is a shame.

Most thoughts, beliefs are inherited, generation after generation; it takes forward thinking and dare I say it some time away from the city you are born in to get an alternative viewpoint.

Let's hope the 5million+ first time home owners from modest council house backgrounds chirp up and defend this champion of the small business.......

I've been baited into replying to Gary's post because......... well, because he's a *insert desired expletive* it's pointless censorship...... big brother, 1984...... sweet dreams are made of this, who am I to disagree.

I really don't care if gary wants to celebrate her death, I never met the woman. Gary makes his choices in life and if having a party will make Gary feel better then good for Gary, and his mates. I shall be busy working and getting on with my life to worry about people dancing on graves.

Roll on next Wednesday when it'll all be over!!
I thought it was all over when the woman died (notice i'm not saying witch, keeping it polite). Never thought that 1 insignificant woman's death would bring about so much b*tching amongst so many.

Had Lady Thatcher been insignificant then I doubt there would have been any opinions to divide. Had she been insignificant then she wouldn't have had the opportunity to make unpopular decisions. Had she been insignificant the majority of the electorate wouldn't have voted for her in 3 successive elections.

Robbie, don't hold back what do you really mean

I'm a Miners son of a Miners son, who comes from a Mining community and was on strike for a full year, so i think i'm qualified to have my own view's, but most of which i won't say on here, other to to say good riddance.

I'm working class and always will be, i'm lucky enough to have a beautiful RS3 in my garage which i have earn't the right to own through hard work. Thatcher may have helped this nation get back on its feet but at what cost. We have nothing left now, we are slowly slipping on the world stage as we have nothing left.

I simply hate her for what she did to my industry and the hardship we had to endure. I bounced back, it took time but i did it. Still doesn't erase the memories.

And god only know's why we are spending 10 mil+ to put her in the ground. Couldn't that have been used to build a hospital or something?

Let's get this over and done so i can enjoy the weekend, i'm meeting up with some interesting people, somewhere in Wales!!!

In my world yes, sorry for being so blunt.
Current climate, pre-death, yes, very insignificant. Only her death as brought her existence back to the fore i'm afraid. So yes, insignificant.

    Mr_Freeze.
    You are a top lad.
The more negative the view, the more backlash we get.
Like you and thousands upon thousands of others, I agree whole heartedly with you and ALL ex-miners, unless they were scabs then I don't!!
