    High Mileage Club

Always read around these BMW engines being bullet proof... "my 3 series has 180k on it and it's still going ner ner.."

How bullet proof is the audi engine?

    Any high milers around here?

Anyone at 200k+ miles or so without having an engine rebuild?

    Just wondering..

Mine has 158k on it, 1.9tdi. The mechanic who changed my Campbell today was saying his passat is on 250k miles, and its a 2L petrol! :o says apart from burning a bit of oil it's all good.

great stuff... sounds promising... with the right maintenance it can last!
ive had jap engines before that have conked out at 80k miles or the gearbox has gone at 70k miles... so its good to know.
im thinking of buying a used a4 with 80k miles on the clock.. so this helps as it doesnt put me off!

    It shouldn't, there's plenty of B6's over 150k and some over 200k.

Mt dad's old Mk2 Audi 90 did 250k back in the early 90's. Garage (Mill in Darlington) took the head of FOC just out of their own interest as they hadn't seen a car with that many miles before and found everything well within tolerance.

So long as its got a good history behind it vag engines will hit 200k easliy. 3 years ago I had a 2000 passat 1.8T which i bought for work at the time doing aprox 1000 miles a week and didnt want to rack the miles up on my other car. Sold it 2 years on with 195k and it never let me down. Changed oil every 10k and changed the cambelt& aux belts. Was starting to get through oil at the end though. Orginal Turbo, gearbox and clutch though which was impressive as i didnt give it an easy life at times.

A4 avant 1.9 tdi (b6) with 154k on it. Used her to travel to morzine and back in feb. 4 in the car, roofbox on fully rammed boot. Total of nearly 1500 miles and didn't drop below a ton. She lapped it up without any problems whatsoever.

Pah, just about run in Scott! I'd worry more about your slushmatic gearbox than the engine itself when the miles pile on!

Unless there is a design fault, or some other fault in the system, any remotely modern engine should see 200k if looked after.

There are obviously bad eggs, which fail prematurely. Toyotas 1AD and 2AD for example.

Im sure years ago i read about a passat that had done almost 500k. Was in the papers.

People are still quite cautious about mileage, and that magical 100k mark. But i see cars at work pushing 100k before they are even 3 years old.

My last car was a 1.9TDI MKIII Golf I bought new in 1995. It had 463k miles on it when I finally gave it up for my current car, I was planning on keeping it going until about 500k but the scrappage scheme was too good an opportunity to miss.

It had a head and turbo rebuild at 250k and I changed the dampers every 150k.

100k miles to a new VW/Audi is nothing, just don’t skimp on the maintenance.

150k for dampers...that might be just the excuse I need for mine lowering as its sat at 157k now and you know, it would be rude not to look after it ha.

That's a mental mileage though! Hats off there to the golf.

That’s pretty much the same here, once I’d made the decision to keep it as opposed to replacing it I upgraded parts when I thought they might be tiring, hence the suspension etc.

I bought the Golf when I was doing high mileage for work with the aim of replacing it after 3 years, however at that point (120K miles) it had never missed a beat I decided to keep for a bit longer. It was chipped at that point, the dampers were replaced at around 150k, which needed to be done in all honestly.

The re-fresh at 250k was planned, everything was working fine but I thought it prudent to check the head for wear, it was fine. But I took the opportunity to upgrade the turbo, switch the injectors and the fuel pump for more uprated models, fitted a Quaife differential and an upgraded clutch followed by having the chip customised to optimise it all.

From then on the humble little 90hp 1Z engine was happy pushing out around 160hp for the rest of its days.

That is impressive. I keep secretly hoping my suspension fails as an excuse. it's like before I got my HDTV I always wanted my trusty CRT to die, but it never did.

My A3 PD130 Quattro is on 164k. Is this a lot? I've had it 18 months, done two oil changes. Changed front springs, top mounts and dampers last month, it badly needed them. Much better now.

How do you know when your car needs new dampers? I want to lower mine and everyone says "after 150k miles you'll need new dampers" but to me they feel fine, but is it like that story of slowly boiling a frog?

Well mine was very harsh over even the smallest bumps and such. Each journey was full of bangs unless I moved to avoid all the bumps I could see.

is it no wonder that the Audi %'s of cars on the roads is on the up ! it was just the other day when my neighbor said to me that he has never seen so many Audis on the road as there is now, Everyone seems to have one, i showed him my miles and how the car has weathered and now he is on the look out for an A3 TDI Sport!

mine just turned 152500, i love am in need of a turbo! has penny valve wear, rattle. took it off the other day to have a look, snaped 1 of the 3 manifold to turbo bolts., realised how much play was in the actuator rod, which resulted from the internal wastegate valve, (penny valve?) and the fixture that goes throught the turbo to hold the (penny) closed had paly, quite alot, i have been quoted late 400 squid for a recon turbo. i want to fix the rattle b4 i get it remapped. love audiz. ;-)
