Rusty petrol tank on a boat.

    Any boaters out there?

I need a spot of help with my fathers boat.

The intergal tank has started to rust and we are unable to remove it from the boat, as the boat was built around the tank.
Does any one know of a way to clean, fix or make the tank usable?

I've been looking at repair kits for motorbike tanks but this boat is a bit big to slosh the solution around as you are ment to do.

any ideas or any thing lads?

What kind of boat is it? Rust is usually a cancer for boats.

    Its a 10foot speed boat.
Fiber glass shell with a metal fuel tank in the middle behind the seats.
(there is a video of it in the youtube section).
The boat is fine but the tank has some serfice rust in side.

Been looking at this and its the only thing I can think of or even find that will do the job with out cutting the boat up to remove the tank.

It's a tidy little speed boat that! OK mate, I'll ask a few people today and see what they say. The most common one I'm guessing will be "Change the fuel tank". I'll keep you posted.

Spoke with a few people. A couple said that for the job to be done properly, the tank would have to come out. The other didn't know and said he would get back to me, and another said that there is a liquid that goes in with the fuel and it cleans the rust. You then flush the fuel out and bob's your uncle. I'll speak to the chandlery when they open up on Monday and see if they can recommend anything.

    Thanks for doing that.
Most people I spoke said the tank had to come out but that's the very very last resort, since its built in to the boat.

I've been looking at the liquid, its Phosphoric acid (or some thing like it) that will clean the tank. Carbonate of soda to remove any acid and the a coating of some liquid to help protect it. Bout £35 for that stuff. It seems the best option so far.

Thanks again and any other ideas are welcome.

No luck buddy. It seems 99% of people here in Portugal would have the tank taken out!

I'd give that stuff you found a go. If it don't work, then it's gonna have to be a tank out jobby. If it does, then buy in bulk, come here and start selling them. You'll make a killing!!! lol

    Thanks for trying mate.
All the boat people here kind of looked at me stupidly when I talked about using a motorbike tank repair kit.
It turned up yesterday and hopefully I'll be doing it on the weekend, after I fixed my dad transit.
I'll report back and let you know how we got on.
    I'll try and get pics.

Lil_Coz, got the boat out of the water and did all 3 stages of that tank clean and I think its worked.
Need to give it another 2-4 days to make sure its fully dry before we put fuel in it.
I'll find out this weekend if there is rust or dirt or tank filler in the filters.
