I guess I actually have crud catchers - not the old type of mudguards, the black plastic type that just fix in one place.

Likewise it isn't cool to arrive at work with a skid mark up the front and back

As said you sound like you should have a jump bike or freeride/ all mountain so you can go up and down. Or go full on DH then it's acceptable to push it up hill haha and way more fun on the downs
God I need a new bike.

I cant get a used one as it's part of a "Bike to Work" scheme so I get a brand new bike tax free then they take monthly payments out of your salary.

Don't forget most shops will charge you 10% on top of the price tag to cover their costs for you using the cycle to work scheme.

I've not found that in my experience. They charge you mrrp for the bike, they can't discount it, but thats the only stipulation.

When I was buying mine the shops I went to always quoted me a extra 10% on to the price soon as I mentioned the cycle scheme.
I emailed the cycle scheme people to ask them if this is normal or even correct and they said it is. Shops do it to cover tax/charges they incur.
Bit **** really and when my cycle scheme ended they offered my 3 options.
Buy the bike for £150, give it back to them or pay £45 for extended rental for 36 months.

Maybe it depends on your scheme provider, I think they revised the scheme not many months ago. I'll be wary of it though so thanks for the heads up.

I saved about £100 on my bike using the cycle scheme.
You will always save money when using the cycle scheme.
I don't think its a great saver as it once was.

They reckon you save up to 55%, but I think 30% is more typical on the prices I'm looking at. The installments are deducted at source so it's the happy feeling of not paying tax
