    TakeAways

In about 6 hours time i'll be sitting down to my 4th Takeaway of the week and it got me thinking.

Are they really as unhealthy as we are lead to believe?

Everything in moderation my friend. At the end of the day the main problem is lack of exercise. Lazy fat people. There I said it.

    Depends what the 'takeaways' are.

Four fried food type takeaways would be unhealthy. But four un-fried meals and it's no different to having home cooked food, apart from the cost.

If only, apart from the fact that he is probably in some takeaway stuffing his face!!

We used to have nearly 4-5 takeaways a week, but we have cut down bigtime now and only have it once a week, but i do make the most of it, normally a kebab and a pizza and chips.

However, I sometimes go for a sheekh kebab in a naan, now i think thats ok, as its fully grilled and most of the oil etc drips off, however the chillies in it and the garlic mayo and chilli sauce may bring all that back...lol!!!

I do love takeaway food though

the short answer is yes. they are. i've got an interest in nutrition and i'm a bit of a gym rat. don't get me wrong, my diet is appalling but that's only because of the hours i work - i don't have time to eat healthily lol.

the main things to watch out for are saturated fats and salt. take aways are high in both. you can eat as much as you like if you're doing the exercise to work it off. i exercise a lot, and my job is quite physically demanding so i can eat a lot and i'm still losing weight (i'm around the 80kg mark now, i was around the 87kg mark when i started this job 6 months ago).

i once worked out that because of my height, muscle mass, the job i do etc. i need around 3000 calories on a training day just to break even. the recommended daily allowance is 2000kcal.

i'm slightly different to most ppl in that i'm actively looking to put on weight. i'm about 6ft 2" and i think i'm skinny. i went on a weight training programme and got my weight up from around 70kg to 85kg in about a year. i used to have a McDonald's 3 times a week because i NEEDED the extra fat and calories - but i noted that i was putting on fat as well. i stopped eating the chips and replaced it with a healthier source of carbohydrate and problem solved. little changes in diet can make big changes in your appearance.

HOWEVER polyunsaturated fats are good for you. they lower your cholesterol and reduce your chance of heart disease. monounsaturated fats are indifferent. neither of them will increase your body fat, unless you're eating stupid amounts. peanuts, walnuts etc. are loaded with "good" fats. it's the saturated fats to watch out for and sadly take aways are loaded with them.

That's rather informative. lol Did not expect that. thanks.

I'm just a little bit over 6foot 3 and about 92kg. Not sure if its good or not but I spend most of my days sitting around a PC with the occasional walk around the base, which could be about a mile. I do cycle during the summer about 15miles aday and the random run with the dogs. so I guess I dont do to badly.

My folks have their own chippy on the Isle Of Wight and when im there i just eat everything on the menu, as well as anything else i can throw in the fryer, i like to help out when im there aswell as consume profits.

Fortunatly they live 200 miles away so i cant over indulge too often.

Best Fish and Chips on the Wight!, they use the same spuds as walkers crisps! and the fish is fresh and everything is cooked to order! they can get through 1000kg of potatoes a week on a good week!

    uummmm...chips!!

Not aware of any FAT tax as of yet?

i'd agree with you if we paid for our healthcare. but we don't, and it's our responsibility to look out for our own health. is it fair that someone doesn't get breast cancer or alzheimer's treatment because someone else has already spent that part of the NHS budget having a coronary?

if you have private healthcare do what you like. if you don't, then it's the government's job to ensure it's doing what it can to either improve the health of it's population or to be able to afford to deal with the consequences on the NHS.

We do pay for our health care.
Not the same as private but we still pay for it.

Educate the people but dont tax the buinesses. Its not their fault that familes (and others) find it easyer to pop to McDs or the local take away then feeding their kids something proper.

that's what i mean. you don't pay based on risk. because you don't pay based on your risk of using the service, you should do your best to make your own health as good as possible so that you're not wasting the resource on preventable disease. clearly we aren't doing this, so i don't think it's unfair for the government to lubricate the process a bit.

don't get me wrong, i hate it when they try and interfere in our choices of what car we can or cannot drive for example - mainly because it's becoming more and more apparent the climate change evidence is as thin as the polar ice caps supposedly are. but for things which affect us as a society, it's up to them to exercise SOME control.

BBC News - Fat patients 'prompts ambulance fleet revamp'

This story is very apt considering the topic! The costs associated with the new ambulances for fatties are obscene. As mentioned they need to get their money back from somewhere I guess. And I don't think they'd be allowed to introduce a 'fat tax' for larger people.

On a side note though...keep eating them take away's, you're not fat yet!

If this fat Tax does come in, I can see all the smaller, low profit shops disappearing altogether. In the ten years I've been in this trade(shop has been trading since 1976), I've noticed a few fastfood shops closing down in the last 12 months! They have been killed off by the increase in gas/electric bills, reducing their low profits to making a loss.

I'm quite keen in getting out myself if I'm being honest, but I have no idea what to do instead! lol

Just punish fatties in the pocket, end of.
Doesnt matter where the calories come from.

We should have some kind of `obesity means test`and tax the individual on that basis.

    "You fat-You Pay!"

There, Ive even invented a slogan.

I dont want to pay for an emerging generation of fatsos NHS treatment.

I don't think that will work completely! I think it should be according to work performed. For example, (And i can say this as my mother isn't a member here...I hope). My mother is quite overweight, but has never had any treatment needed due to her weight. She is relatively fit (for her size), and a healthy person (again for her size). She has never smoked or drank alcohol...EVER. To tax her would be unfair until she becomes a drain on society...sorry mum!

I am loving your slogan though...genius!

best way is to get one of those scales that measures your body fat. Asda were selling them for 10 not long ago. i snapped one of those bad boys up sharpish lol
