I like this forum, as its a good no-nonsense place, and seems to have many very knowledgable people on it........

Ive been on many a forum and this one seems to be very good.

But one thing that reeeaallly grinds me is the use of abbreviations for everything!

Too many TLA's (three letter abbreviations). Takes me half a day to figure out what the hell everyone is talking about!

Its as bad as 'txt tlk'!!

Anyone else noticed this?

Yes, but when you start to specialise in any subject abbreviations are fairly common place, for instance scientific formula, it would be a major pain in the *** to have to write the words out in a formula. speed = distance divided by time s=d/t. It makes life a bit easier and if your ever unsure no one will think less of you for asking.

The above is a bit of a poke in the eye but illustrates my point quite well, I imagine putting those abbreviations in made your life a little but easier.

I have noticed but its the same on all forums and the things you have listed down it is understandable why they are abbreviated.

DV-diverter valve

You probably didnt want me to explain what they are but what i am saying is that these are mentioned in a lot of threads so it can be a pain typing the full name every time somebody starts a thread. Im pretty new to forums myself so i know where your coming from with this but i also understand why others do this as well.

There's a huge difference between 'txt tlk' and TLA's, as you put it. Despite my huge post count and being one of the longest standing members on here, even I get stuck on a few of them, but you just need to be taught once, and you'd usually never forget it!

I would much rather type DV than Divertor Valve, it's just the way it is. If you ever get stuck, try typing the letters into google, and it usually finds you the meanings.

Lol. Try working in advertising. Text speak and abbreviations are cool. Ctr, roi, OR, PI, Ppc, cpm and ppi are about half the abbreviations I here on a daily basis.

Every day I deal with TLAs, acronyms and TLAs thats turned in to words. Just to really throw you off, Half the time i dont know if its a TLA, a word or a TLA that they turned in to a word or even a acronyms.
Civi IT on a Navy Base, Its a great place to be.
