I'd be asking if it's had an injection pump during its life (and how recently), they're notorious (not a case of if, but when); and also how often has it had oil & filter changes (and what type of oil has gone in) - the 2.5TDIs are starting to become known for having chocolate cams (see fjtwelve's massive thread on A6 2.5TDI quattro 180bhp tuning in the Diesel section - I think he's now on his third or fourth set of cams), the potential for problems is greater if the car has had low oil pressure / filthy oil (if you can get one which hasn't been on AVS (Long-Life) servicing, all the better. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, I was considering a 2.5TDI quattro very recently, but because of the potential issues bought a 1.8T quattro instead - and then spent 9 hours with a good mate stripping her to bits to solve an oil sludge problem which is now becoming the 1.8T's biggest achilles - moral of the story, all cars have their potential problems, check as best you can (that doesn't always save your ass though - we checked thoroughly); but most of all have a little spare in your budget to spend a couple of quid putting things right if they need it...

All the best, let us know how you get on...

    Regards,

    Rob.

200k miles is quite high. Even though diesels last a long time, I'm sure there will be a lot of replacing/refurbing in the coming weeks/months. The owners are bound to brag up the car cos they want to get rid. But this is just my opinion.

    Anyway, Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the replies. I was a bit rushed with first post so here goes.
Ita a 2000 (dont know what reg its on a Private plate, not inc) 180 sport quattro, 6 spd manual. he says it's full Audi SH to 140K (audi dealers farthers car) then he bought it and has had it for 4 1/2 years and used independent Audi specialist's had all belts and water pump done twice in that time (not sure about injector pump, i didnt ask TBH but i will) its up for 2450 negoiatble but not sure how far down he will come.

I havent been and seen it yet but looking at the pics it looks in very good condition (but i guess we can all clean and polish)
My feeling are its a bit dear with 238K but what would be a fair price to offer, assuming i do want to when i see it?

OK, so things to check - if in those first 140K miles it was AVS serviced (I'd guess it's fairly likely) - If it was I'd really be hoping to see recent receipts for camshafts. Again, find out if she's had an injection pump recently.

Again, not trying to put you off, but these are fairly important issues on this car.

Also, it'll take you a good hour or so to read, but PLEASE read fjtwelve's thread in the Diesel section - CLICK HERE. I promise you'll be glad you did - it's going to tell you EVERYTHING you need to be concerned about with that engine...

    All the best,

    Rob.

well on the bit of reasearch i have done it looks like he is overpriced, even though its a 2000 car acording to the rough what car valuation, with 238K on the clock its worth 15-1800, and i cant see him coming down that far.
And the 238K just scares me to much.

Wrong forum i know but anyone know much about 525 BMW (deisel)

Same engine, more or less. At least it uses the same fuel pump
