    Mk2 gti 16v?

Has anyone got this car on here, if so, how fast do they feel? As they only weigh in at about a tonne dont they?

Cant get one yet as insurance is still unreal, even thought they insure me for my current car.
Its gone replaced with a mk2 golf gti 16v :D

I have, they are ok out the box, but you need to use all the revs to make it go quick. I am comparing it to my remapped S3 when I say ok. Of course, once you have a few passengers or carry some sort of ballast in the boot, you can feel the weight.
I have my 1989 16V(modified) insured on classic policy with limited mileage, so no NCB needed, came to Ł326 limited to 5k miles I think.

Awesome cars, go get one now ! I'm all about the 8V, anybody with a 16 valve will say the 8's are crap and anybody with an 8 valve would never own a 16 but they are both really good cars ! If you can, don't buy a 5 door because they just look wrong.

My last one, excuse the 16V badge it was on there for a joke ! Genuinely my dream car, I would pick that Golf over any supercar you could throw at me for fun factor -

    BIG brakes !

    And stupendously shiny !

And they do sound good if you do them right !

I quite often say I'm going to do things.

    Then never do them.

Purist huh? Mine is a 5door, it doesn't effect the car in anyway to drive, just the looks! I snapped my one up, as I knew the previous owner, who had it for 9 years, and it was the right price! Given a choice now of course, yes, a 3door is probably a better investment, but there's nowt wrong with 5 doors(I have a family ok).

Haha, I was curious about wether that would get up your nose...16V and a 5 door, thankfully it couldn't get any worse than that; they didn't make an auto GTI !

Nahhh, all Mk2 GTI's are good and I'd have any of them now quite happily. Personal preference for me would be the exact model I had before, but that all changes for different people. Try a load of them out before you buy one and forget about the money, just but the one that feels the tightest and has the best body.

I had a Mk2 8v, and I loved it, best car I have ever owned, if I had the chance to get it back, I would have it back in a flash.

Always thought the 16v was a bit too rev hungry, the 8v is alot more torquier...crap in the wet, but great fun in the dry, a nice drop on it and a decent set of rims and you got yourself a go kart!!!

All i did to mine was an air filter, exhaust, lowered suspension.

It had a set of 15s on it, single light debadged grill, m3 lights on the back and it was in GLEAMING Alpine White......

    Oh I want you back

Yer I really do want one when the times right, I would like a 16v as it would be an occasional drive for fun, so wouldnt mind giving it some revs, plus its got about 30bhp more out of the box, Ive found some info out about the 2.0 engines from the mk3's etc.

There lovy looking cars you got too!. you see them for all sorts, is one on autotrader now for 599, but the person cant even be bothered to spell correct and the one sentence hes giving makes no sense.

I've often found that people who are a little bit older have absolutely mint ones ! They appeal to all sorts of people, and I try not be stereotypical and obviously its more about the car than the owner but I'd always be dubious of the "Yeah mate, fonin' bout dat golf yer?" types because the only reason they would have a car like that would be to thrash the nuts off it!

Ref' engine changes putting in the 2L 8V from an Audi 80 would be best, they are a little bit faster and the larger displacement gives you the speed you need without the revs but they do rev really well!

A friend of mine had one, he's in his late 50's and has had the car from new and he's never put anything non-genuine on it! Even to the extent that it failed its MOT because the back box had a hole in it and the MOT center fitted a pattern part to it and after he had the car delivered back he went to VW and had a genuine one put back on! The car was absolutely mint and didn't have a single mark on it, I managed to buy it off him for Ł600 with a years tax and mot !

I think the original advert is still on Car and Classic (another good site for picking up cars!) from when I sold it on if you search for it !

Try joining up to www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk I used to be admin on there (8Klappe) but I left when some of the less desirable faces started to show up and it seemed like a forum full of kids and people who stereotypically you wouldn't want to take car advice from! A bad advert for the forum there, but as with all of them there are a load of good guys on there and normally heaps of good quality cars for sale.

If you do go to look at one and it's within a fair distance from me I'd be more than happy to give one a going over for you, or if you want any advice just drop me a PM. Oh and also on the Mk2 forum there is a fairly extensive buyers guide as well

Oh and finally, check with insurance before you go and buy one! I thought "Ahhhh, only insurance group 14!" but when my insurance company had me paying triple figures a week I had to sell up pretty soon

Thanks for all info mate. Yer ive seen quite a few of the younger people on some of the forums, ruining there golfs with stupid add ons. Im young yer lol but i like to keep things original. I would go near one if it was owned buy a dubber though.

Insurance is the problem atm though being a bit more than my a3, but in may it goes down to Ł1000.

If i goes to buy one thats around our way i will give you a pm thanks.

Thats what i was told, to get an audi engine, as they were less likely to caned and more popular or something like that.

    cheers for the info .

    No problems mate

The Audi engines will have had an easier life and they are slightly faster with a larger MAF/SPI unit.
