So, Vauxhall have produced a 2.8 V6 twin turbo 321 BHP motor. That's a fair gain over the 265 2.7 V6 bi-turbo. I guess it just goes to show what 10 years can do...

I wonder what the vauxhall engine will put out once it's mapped?

id love to see wot you coud get if audi made a newer version of the 2.7 Biturbo, i find it impressive when manufacturers get 400bhp from a 2.0, japs engines huh!

Yeah, but with more lag that my loft. I will always remember the Top Gear Fiat Marea beating the Evo FQ400 down 1.7 miles of runway accelerating in "Top Gear".

At least the 2.7 bi-turbo has little lag. Still, I wonder what he 2.8 twin turbo Insignia plant will be capable of?

i thought it was the same engine as the last vectra VXR 2.8 single turbo??

I drove the signum v6 turbo last summer and its way too powerfull for front wheel drive...To be honest, the chassis is rubbish and its not able to put all that power down reliably. Also, the auto gearbox did not do it for me either. Fast in a fast line just like any other vauxhall !

320hp from 2.8L is pretty tame, even for 1998. Remember Ford had 200hp from a 2L back in the 1980's

The S4 wasnt a particularly highly tuned engine, just like the 1.8T the idea of the turbos isnt all out power, but to provide bags of midrange torque, making the drive effortless.

Or, the MI16 put out 165 BHP from a normally aspirated 1.9 back in the mid 90's

I am a Saab/Vauxhall/Alfa/Fiat/Landrover salesman, the VXR is poo compared to the Turbo X Saab 9-3.

This genuinely is an awesome car!

Or not much of a comparison if you compare it to the 380BHP 2.7 V6 bi-turbo of the RS4.

I don't think technology is the issue, performance cars are built to the power levels of the times. I think all 10 years has gained us is more powerful cars being the norm.

BMW had 321bhp from 3.2 NA a long time ago, 2.8 turbo making 321 is hardly voodoo

I seem to remember Turbo Technics were getting 300bhp-ish out of the old Cologne V6 OHV lump in XR4x4s in the eighties. I've always wondered what they were like, and really, really like the idea of a 300hp XR4i! I'm an 80s' child / Essex boy, I'm cursed, I really am.

same here :( imagine all the cosworth gayers youd upset.

im rigidly either german or jap cars only, so the ford will never happen

i went to an RS meet with a guy that i work with (he had a focus rs) and they were such gays.

one guy boasting how this year he had done double the mileage he did last year. 12 miles over 6, because he came to the meet twice this year so far

people moaning how the part numbers on their wheels were not sequential

people moaning how they couldnt get their wheel arches spotless after driving through a puddle when they got caught out in the rain

how theyve now done 35k miles, the car is about to die and worthless cos its got moon mileage

cosworth drivers need to MTFU. go to a GTI meet and youll hear stories about how the only prep you did on your 20 year old golf to go to lemans was to get some windscreen polish and add some screen cleaner

It's weird, isn't it? In the '80s and '90s the Ford brigade were the most rough and ready, up for it, fun loving bunch you could imagine. The sort who would carry an axle in the boot to change when they get to the Pod for an acceleration run, and then swap it back to drive home.

What happened? I put it down to the ready availabilty of hair styling products.

unfortunately yes, i think. some of the cars were utterly fantastic, a small group of sierra cosworths, a couple badged as rs500s but all pampered beyond beleif.

one guy had a v8 capri, he gave it plenty of welly leaving the meet etc but the rest treated more like ornaments rather than the bundles of fun they really are

Oi! Less RS bashing please! I'm an RS owner and owners club registered and I certainly don't sit there an polish my sump nut. Friends run things from fairly standard RS Turbos through to largely modified examples (300-400bhp), Cosworths in varying states of tune, a couple of Focus RS's and a couple of new Focus RS's (both running circa 380bhp). That's hardly gay by any standards now is it?

Most marques have the brigade of tyre tread polishers but having been in the RS scene for the last 14 years I feel qualified to say there are as many if not more people out there using the cars as they built to be. RS500 is a bit of a rarity to be fair though as only 496 cars ever made it to the road and there aren't close to that number left now, their prices reflect this.

they could have all the bhp in the world, but if they drive them like miss daisy and into it for the "wrong" reasons then its as gay as the day is long. lovely cars, but the poncyness puts them in the same pigeon hole a TT drivers

All the associates I have within the scene drive them properly and as they were designed/modfied to be. I'm a regular at the RSOC track day in Feb where the cars are driven very hard indeed. The poncy polishers are more of a minority, the cars are looked after (they have to be they are knocking along with the years now), but they are driven, and driven hard

if so, then scarily all the polishers are in essex (which surely is sacrilege)

one guy was complaining that when he washed the car, one of the dealership stickers came off the rear number place. this was on an escort rs1600. aiming for concorse is good in a way i suppose, but totally mad in my eyes where a car is a functional tool

Oh I agree. Build them and use them. For sure it's nice to see well kept and cared for examples but it seems insane to just hide them away. Admittidly mine is now a summer only toy but that's more down to the impracticalities of it now, and I look like a complete birk climbing out over a roll cage of a 20 year old car wearing a suit. lol

the Turbo X Saab 9-3.
This genuinely is an awesome car!

It had better be as it's two wheel drive cousin was one of the most dangerous and badly engineered cars I have ever been in!!
I drove one during a Saab marketing day I was invited on.
Front wheel drive has never been my idea of heaven but coupled with a gutsy turbo and the most outrageous torque steer I have ever experienced and it was barely driveable.
Not even funny!

would be interesting to see what it does with 4wd (even a spastic haldex system)

anyone else been tempted with a volvo s60R?
