Smashed, Hacked and gone in 90 seconds

I remember reading an article on here some time ago, regarding BMW keyless entry being easily overcome by thieves, and I was pleased I had bought an Audi!!

But in this weeks Sunday Times, I read of Mr. Witte, who had bought an RS4, with cobra trak, and Keyless entry. He had 2 CCTV cameras monitoring his pride and joy.

In the early hours of the morning, he received a call from the security company, telling him that his car was being driven away at speed!

12 minutes later, the thieves had disabled the tracking device!! the car hasn't been seen since.

The CCTV shows that it took 90 seconds to enter and steal the car.

The police say that hundreds of Audis have been stolen this year in the midlands alone. Audi thefts have quadrupled in a year.

Audi have viewed the footage, but refuse to admit that there is a problem! They say the evidence is inconclusive! Even the dealership who sold Mr. Witte his car, have had one stolen using the same method.

Since the keyless entry is clearly not secure, and the tracker can also be disabled, I wonder what we are meant to do? Post an armed guard?

Layered aftermarket security. Problem with factory stuff is it's always in the same place and fitted the same way.

That sucks. Unfortunately it's a case of "If they want, they'll have it", regardless of what you try in order to keep it safe.

I would be more worried if they broke into my house to get the keys - that's got to be the worst thing ever...

The neighbour of a friend had his A6 S-Line stolen from his drive 1 week after he picked it up from the dealers. Seems to be a big problem in Solihull according to my sources!

Buy a disklock, covers whole steering wheel and is very tough.

If a thief can pick your car lock, they can pick a disc lock!
Sounds like they made a key prior to stealing it. not imposible but either had access to the keys or been to the car twice. would suggest checking all earlier footage.

    as said, it a deterrent,

best way is to have a switch that isolates the ignition, if you really want to be "safe"

my dad's range rover was stolen off the drive way. They broke in and stole the key. I don't think its worth having anything like a kill switch as I was talking to someone afterwards about it and they said that a friend had his subaru stolen that he had a special chip that you had to plug in otherwise it would only go 30 mph and his car got stolen. A few nights later the thieves broke into his house and held a knife to his throat demanding the chip. If they want the car they are going to get it don't make it so they have to get you involved as its only a car at the end of the day. The best thing I can recommend is have GAP insurance. they top up your insurance pay out to the full price that you paid for it (including factory options) defiantly worth it

one thing to be mindful of is, be glad they are able to break into the car outside your house and steal it

These guys stop at nothing, so if they can't break into it, they will be breaking into your house, armed most likely and you will be awoken with a 12 gauge or similar pointing at your head demanding the keys, and probably receive a good beating if not worse at the same time also.

Annoying as it is to have your pride and joy nicked, key thing is you don't get hurt.

Hi @udi A3, I don't think they had the key, or they wouldn't have smashed the window to get in, and they wouldn't have had to use a gizmo to silence the alarm.

should have a little spark plug device fitted into the petrol tank that could be triggered remotely when the engine's running, so you know the scum are in it.

Wouldn't want that electrical circuit to malfunction though! Breaking my S3 8L has mean't I've met loads of A3 S3 TT & Golf mk4 owners. Seems the 1.8T blows up/ catches fire easily enough already!

food for thought as people continue to drag this kind of thread up.

I can program a new key to most audis up to 2012, through the obd port in about 2-4 mins.
This lock pick can be set from your doorlock and will work in your ignition.

'link removed, would not want too many to see this'

picking a lock in the time it takes to walk around your car... gone in 3-4 mins is realistic.

What I found scary, I was working in the Coventry area with the father on a building site and he lost his van keys (Doh!). Rung up a local firm, 30 mins later a guy arrives with a spare key pre cut.

Not so easy on an audi :D Other manufacturers hold the key cut details on a database though that is relatively easy to access.

But still, if you had access you could literally get into anybody's car, bar coding the immobiliser !

coding the immo is easier than gaining entry.

however ive just found this tool write-up aimed at VAG cars.:

Keyless device can open and start all vehicles types without trace, all cars with keyless entry system within seconds

keyless comes in two bags (receiver and transmitter) we can make any shape you want for the two bags

keyless has the latest antenna technology

    keyless has Lithium-Polymer rechargeable batteries
device can copy any keyless key from half to 3 meters from the original key distance (depends if the keyless batteries are new or used) and distance between tramsitter and receiver up to 400 Meter

Device can detect copy open and start all cars with all frequencies even latest models

Device is updatable even if in the future they change the frequency for example from 315/433/434/868 to any new frequency

We can demonstrate the device on different vehicles models at any time

Contact us for an appointment we have almost all type of new cars for demonstration

This makes me ponder adding a secondary thatcham after market alarm/imobiliser, which would mean more faffing around for would be thieves, so they cant be in and out as quick...

but I suppose the issue is, if they want it, they will have it anyway. Unless you have 24 hour minders armed with AK47s lol.

Disconnecting the OBD port from behind the plug would stop them programming a key surely?

My old Fiesta Rs turbo... prob one of the easiest cars to steal ever.. til I chopped into the fuel pump wiring and put a crafty little switch under the dash...No fuel pump, not going anywhere... keys or no keys, keyless entry or not... worst thing is, your radio might be gone!
