Audi Part Number Question (last letter...revision No. ????)

What does the last letter on an Audi part number signify ?
Does it refer to a revision number, so if you have an old part ending in E and a new part ending in H it is ok to fit as it is just a revsion / improvement.

I have a suspected faulty throttle and the existing part is :
8E2 721 523E
And the new part I have in my hand is :
8E2 721 523H


The main reason for asking is because also on the label the 'E' has additional text on the label refering to 'Quattro' but the 'H' has 'Diesel' written on it (the car is a 2.0TFSi)

Turns out the E is for petrol and is now superseded by a J
The H is for diesel.

Tried fitting it anyway and in the usual buggy diagnostics software style the EPC light came on after blipping the throttle, rather then any other type of logical warning.

Just to add, even the Audi technician was suprised when I called to confirm.
He started by saying it's revision related, but then after checking the system confirmed what I thought, that they are specific Petrol / Diesel variants.

To me, it's a really odd way to do it. I work for JLR and all of our part numbers end with two letters like this;

Ah22-14s140-AA

Ah22, is the year and model

The bit in the middle is what the part "actually" is,

And, the end letters denote the following;
AA > AB, is a revised part
Whereas;
AA > BA, is the same part but for a different variant (say petrol/diesel, manual/auto, etc...)
