I took my 3litre cabrio, with a slight judder in multitronic at slow speed, into dealer. They said they had forgotten to change oil at 40k so changed it (now at 70k) cured for a few days but now worse so they say needs new clutch pads at £1500! Could this be caused/exacerbated by them forgetting to change oil, as car has been driven very gently from new?

They forgot to change it @40k miles? Surely, the responsibilty is on you to keep tabs on that, but they maybe should have reminded you @40k'ish miles?
Anyways, I think you should ask for some goodwill on the repair, telling them you paid X amount for a car that you chose over a merc/bmw of similar model for it's build quality and reliability, but apparently not.... and that you're disappointed that something has failed at only 70k miles!

Failing that, get a quote from your local independant specialist for the same repair.

Thanks. Apparently it is part of the service schedule. I don't check if an item has been left out by a main dealer. Do you think it could have affected the gearbox

I did some research whilst looking for a B6/7 A4, and I believe it's a common problem when the auto gearbox service is not carried out. Not really read up on what damage it could cause, but looks like this could be it!
