Can anyone help me with towing laws?

My mates just bought a mitsubish 3000 gt twin turbo from brighton so it would be a 320mile round trip and he wants to tow it home, it has no mot and the engine doesnt run. Is it legal to tow on a solid bar? the dvla cant give a straight answer and my mates adamant that its legal to do so. I just dont want to go get in it and get f**ked by the police.

Any help would be appreciated

i dont think you can tow on the mway
as above no txt needs a flatbed
cant even go on a spec with no tax
 
thats what i thought wasnt ever so sure tho so thanks for the advice guys.
