I've been looking at different Audi Models and noticed something that I can't work out.
The name Sportback, How does this work?
What makes a sportback?

This is a A7 Sportback.

A5 and A7 looks like a sportback. Its kind of sporty, sleek and curvy *** end, I understand them calling it a sportback but why did they call the A1 and A3 a sportback when it looks like a mini avant.

A4 Avant

Does any one know why the small avants are called sportbacks when they clearly don't look like the other sportbacks?

Also, which was the first sportback?

A3 is the first Sportback, it's just Audi's term for 5 door, just like they the term 'Avant' for their Estate models, as it 'sounds classier maybe??

BMW call their estate models as 'Touring' models also. It's all about brand and image.

I see your point.
but why did they not keep the name to the shape of the car.
If someone goes to you I got an avant or a touring. you know what they mean.
But if someone goes I got a sportback what do you picture a sleek sloaping back end of a A5 or a smaller avant shape?

Its just daft. lol
