    Polo 1.4tdi pd Vs Corsa 1.7cdti

    Hi all, looking to get a cheap commuter, so far these 2 are front runners, both 52 plates, both very similar mpg figures but which is likely to be cost effective with servicing, parts and reliability as I don't have much knowledge of diesels.

    Personally it would be the Polo, they might be slightly more expensive on service etc, not by much though, however build quality and life expectancy of the car will be a whole lot better.

    Any reason why you are looking at diesels for such a small car. You must be doing a considerable amount of mileage. I read in one of the car magazines that you would have to do around 120k to start recovering your costs on a small car, compared to something like a 320d where you need to do about 70k. Don't quote me on this becuase I don't know how they calculated it and if I remember the magazine was published last year, so the circumstances may have changed now.

    Anyhow, it's the Polo for me.

    Well I've seen both of these cars for around £2k so hopefully wouldn't need to recoup much, Im not a fan of bmw's although I wouldn't mind a 530d.

    This only applies to new purchases, I doubt a used buy would be such a huge gap to recouperate costs!

    I'd go Polo, it has a 'Golf' feel to it, the Corsa is probably more fun to drive, but the one I sat in on Sunday was full of rattles!

    I would rather stick my genitals through a blender than have the misfortune of driving a modern Vauxhall. We have a fleet of them at work and they are always in at the main dealers with one issue or another. Saddly my company Passat got dinged when one of our other guys borrowed it and it looks like I will be getting an Astra as a replacement. Gutted is an understatement

    Our fleet at work we get astra and focus diesels mainly, I find the astra's have huge lag and then too much in one go, the fords are so nice to drive, even power and great handling (for an estate). We did use to suffer with the vectra's, limp mode straight out of the garage after a repair.

    I have a 52 plate Lupo 1.4tdi (sure virtually identical to Polo), had a "little" thing where engine exploded after not long owning it, however that said all is since forgiven:-)
    All in all a fantastic run around and seem to get high 50's/60mpg and i regularly give it welly, although other half drives it most of time and a bit lighter footed.
    Other than replacement engine and regular service parts, it's only required a brake switch if i recall. Just been in for it's service today and all ok at around 116k miles.
    The engine issue was apparently just incredibly unlucky and potentialy just a defect from new that decide to throw it's hand around 100k, something to do with an end bearing or something if i recall.
    Love driving it, reminds me of my mk1 golf days:-)
