White one for the front of the car and a yellow one for the rear, both conforming to the UK road law...

By all means change your plates but keep hold of the dealer plates, when you sell makes the car look more origional

Halfords will make you a pair of completely plain plates - their compulsory logo that they need to put on the plate for legal reasons is very faint that you can't see it - was made up with mine. Still need to go back and get them to make me a 9x7 plate completely plain!

Completely Plain Plates = Illegal. You must have the suppliers Post Code on them + the Reg no (appropriately spaced in CORRECT UK type face) to be street legal!!
Ordered beginning of July 2010 ... Arrived 4 March 2011 Black Edition 2.0Tdi170 SportbackQuattro..lots of bits... Others in the Garage......

It does have the suppliers post code on them, as mentioned above it has all the legals on the plates but they do it clear to keep the plates looking plain.

I got some 3d letters and shrunk the size of the letters too, but only a little, nice and subtle with plain background, cleans the car up I think, nothing worse that plates with all the dealer/garage logo's phone numbers etc.! never any grief off the Law either and had them on 3 cars

The latest thing that dealers seem to be doing to keep their name on the front and back of your car is lipped plates. These are normal rectangular plates but with a lip on the lower edge which they add the name. So even if you ask that no number plate surround is used their name is still there. Here is a link to a website which shows this type of plate: Bestplate Ltd - Number Plate Manufacturer & Supplier

We have just purchase a new A1 for my wife and we asked for no number plate surround to be used but it came with these lipped plates. I spoke to the dealer and asked for them to be changed for plain rectangular plates and the reply was that this was now the only type of plate they supplied. After a short discussion they are now looking to source a set of plain plates. If not I shall ask for a cheque from them for the £24 we paid for number plates and I will source my own. Only a minor point and cost but why should my wife's car be used to advertise an Audi dealer and us pay for it.

Not quite sure that the lip would be easy to cut off as its made from the same material as the plate itself.

Anyway I've no need to go to that trouble as I collected a set of new plain plates from the dealers on Thursday complete with the sticky pads to stick them to the car. As we were in my A3 and not my wife's new A1 I said I was quite happy to fix them myself.

i chopped the lip of a rear plate i got from my old works (nissan main dealer) only reason why i chopped it is that the plate wouldnt fit in the plate holder on my bike rack, i used a grinder with a cutting disc
