If your desired offset is between 42-50 and a set of wheels are say 25 for example you can get adaptors to add mm onto the ET but if the offset is more say 57 for example what can you do to adapt the wheels?

Nope, you can only reduce offset with adaptors/spacers. The offset number is generally a minus number, so ET35 means ET-35, and 10mm spacer/adaptors will make it ET-25. The lower the offset, the more the wheels poke outwards.

If you have wheels that are ET57 you need 15mm adapter to make them ET42. 57-15=42

Ok Thanks for the replies fellas, i thort if i got 15mm spacers it would make it ET 72, my mistake, so on my a3 8p what is the lowest ET i could get away with?

Really depends on the rim and what tyres you are running? I see you are running bentley rims on your 8P, surely the offset on those rims and the width of the tyres will give you a good idea on clearance you have to play with?

Just not really clued up on this offset and tyre size stuff mate, dont really know where to start. I know the PCD is 5x112.

So what is the crack with tyres to rim? im running 215/35/19's how do these numbers relate to the rim size? i know that standard bentley tyres run 275's so how do you know what you can get away with? or i this just from tried and tested? what does the 35 stand for?

Ok so ive done some reading, apparently the 35 is sidewall height? is that in other words how low the profile of the tire is?

Random Example here 225/40R18 Z rated. The 225 part is the width of the tyre in mm's/the 40 part is the sidewall/profile of the tyre in relation to the tread, it's a percentage of the width of the tyre, in this case, 40%, so the side walls is 40% of the width(225)/R18 is the diameter of the rim, in this case, R18 means suitable for an 18" rim/ Z rated is the speed rating of the tyre, the latter the letter, the faster the tyre is more capable of before it goes kaput!
