yet again the M3 annihilates the RS 4/5

is this really realistic? people are not going to drive the car like they did on the track

on the open road and everyday use and snow, lol

what are your thoughts

My father has a 3.0tdi a5 quattro and he lent it to me for a day as a birthday present (fully insuranced of course). Obviously i wanted to test the preformance credentials and did hammer it on certain quiet country b roads.

As my confidence grew i found an m3 2007 reg at some traffic lights which directly ahead of them lies a long straight dual carriageway (with very little traffic i may add to please the pc brigade). We gave the usual glances and i knew he was game from the get go. To my surprise i utterly destroyed him off the lights (it was a wet day and a little wheelspin ruined his efforts). Advantage 3.0 tdi, however he soon caught me as i was coming out of 2nd gear but when you hit the third gear in the 3.0tdi the 500nm of torque takes hold and i pushed ahead of him again. Around 4th gear coming up 5th i was reaching stupid speeds (so slowed down as not my car) but not once did the m3 get past me until i decided to slow it down.

If a 3.0 tdi can match an m3 in a real world drag i'm sure the rs5 should manage. Quattro for me always win over rear wheel drive in the 'real world'!

As a track car and most probably drivers car, M3 is supreme no doubt! But I think potential RS5 drivers would be buying a better all rounder for use all year round.

Let's be realistic, how many of us who can afford to purchase a brand new M3 are willing to drive it sideways out on the open road. Saying that, I'd wouldn't buy an RS5 neither, a 'used' B7 RS4 in Avant form seems a better buy, in my opinion. ;)

the point is that if you're not going to exploit the performance, just what the hell is wrong with the A5 3.0TDI S-Line? and apparently some comparisons have put the S5 (with the supercharged V6) as being faster on a track than the RS5. apparently it's less understeery and because of the torque the power is in a better part of the rev range. i

i love the way the RS5 looks, but apart from that there's nothing that sells it to me over one of it's lower brethren.

what i don't understand is that the RS4 was nearly as quick as the M3, and the RS5 is meant to be an evolution of the RS4 so i'm not quite sure how they've managed to muck it up.

When you look at any RS5 test it is always the same. Understeer and not that much "feel" as M3.
I had an A4 B5 2.8 quattro before the first RS4 was released and it was absolutely amazing to drive.
It was destroying anything similar on the road. BMW 328, merc 2.3 kompressor didn't stand a chance.
Can't even imagine four wheel drive with double the power. I'm sure I would love it.
Sure, for the track RWD is a better option as it brings more smile to your face but daily driving? No chance.

If the Stig drove the Audi against the bmw instead of Clarkson driving i think the Audi would have won .seems like hes Anti Audi to me ...

Iv'e driven the e92 m3 dct when they first come out (not the competition pack) and driven an rs5, rs5 is better in my opinion and that’s coming from someone who owned an M3 before (54 plate E46 M3 SMG II Coupe) the Audi is so much more classier, better image all round, better stability/handling in all weathers, better looking car in my opinion, smoother gearbox, slightly better exhaust note IMO, faster in a straight line, faster launch that will leave the rwd m3 embarrassed and absolutely kills the bmw on the interior comparisons, bmw are old hat, but yet the only 1 way the bmw seems to "defeat" the RS is on a race track as its rwd which on a track terms yes IMO is the perfect race setup, but the m3 didn’t manage to lose the rs5 at all?? They should of had the stig in the rs and clarkson in the m3 I would have the rs5 anyday over the beemer, there so much more exclusive than the m3, there’s 2 e92's m3 living really close round my area. I think showslike top gear etc are slightly biased towards the m3’s is simply because there tail happy which some people love and makes it more enjoyable… depends on what you want in a fast coupe I guess

I dunno, clarkson had a fair bit of praise for the rs4 when apparently racing the climber. No doubt his opinions may be slightly biased though, just like members of an audi forum will be. Looks wise I think the m3 has it, also im sure the m3 will be more the 'drivers car'.

The tail coming out on the road is very dangerous as well. My mate had an old W reg m3 and was racing a Mini Cooper S a few years back around a roundabout. His tail came out and clipped a Picasso..............costly insurance claim indeed and the mini just carried on.

m3 is not realistic as a fast road car. The rwd is more suited to the track

I agree with all of the above, as far as fast road cars are concerned, the BMW M3 is a phenominal car, and it truly excels on the race track.

The RS5 looked stunning and im sure it could deliver 95% of what the M3 delivered, but being the heavier car with 4wd, and consequently, a lot of understeer, it shouldnt be able to beat the M3 anyway.

However, if I was to choose one of those 2 performance cars, for everyday use, and a bit track day fun once in a while, Id choose the RS5 everytime.

Looks classier, and far more exclusive too :)

I think youve hit the nail on the head....... 'in the real world'

glad in a way the m3 was 'better' on TG that way the RS 4/5 stays rarer

Top Gear is the best car program ever but Jeremy and his crew are not known to be really fair.
It seems that both cars are almost as fast as each over.

And that driven properly the RS5 can also go side ways around corner.

Look at this video until the end if you don't believe it.

That said I love both cars and couldn't decide in between.

Have to say I prefer the m3, so much more of a drivers car however prefer the looks of the rs, the m3 will take some beating, and I don't mean just on the track. Admittedly im a bmw enthusiast as well.

I said this to a mate in work today
jezza is pretty much always anti audi .

if jeremy could actually drive it properly it would help. notice he had it understeering all the time on purpose, going in too fast with his foot welded on the accelarator.
he just doesnt understand the difference in driving style with a 4wd car! if it wont power over oversteer he doesnt understand it......

watch the stig chuck it around it on the timed lap. not once was it understeering, he had it oversteering a few times!

I'd have to say M3! There are few cars in the M3 price bracket that deliver this level of all round performance combined every usability and running costs. I think the RS5 is over priced. Granted its a good allround car but I saw one in the showroom for 70K and thats closer to GTR Skyline money! The new 2011 Skyline is 69K!

PS - I've never ever known Clarkson to give any Audi a good review!

Eeeer, search Topgear Audi RS4 on youtube, he rated that one!

He also praised the a6 to Scotland and back on 1 tank.

I'd rather have the RS over an M3. If I was going to buy an M3 it'd be an older Evo - cheap as chips and still entertaining but it's not an Audi.

I'd also prefer an RS4 over the RS5 but that's just me.

Apparently the RS5 is in it's last year & Audi only offer 1 RS at a time, for 2 years then rotate to a different model RS . So next year could see an RS7, RS4 or RS3? I'd like to see a new model RS4 personally.

Glad this was bought up, was having a discussion with some people in work. My point was the same as most of yours, for your average driver, on a twisty country road, dry or wet, under steer is a much more manageable handling trait then over steer. Clarkson didn't look to be working anywhere near as hard as the Stig, and every time the Audi looked to be gaining down the straights, they would cut to a different scene.
I like Top Gear, but a lot of people watch Top Gear that don't really like cars, and as such seem to have the opinion that Audi's aren't worth a s**t.

Rant Over

To be fair to him, he rated the RS4, until it came up along side the M3 and the Merc :puke:, then it wasn't a good car at all  but he does say that the R8 is one of the best cars he's ever driven, but apart from that, he doesn't like them.

well thats not true.... we have the RS5 & TTRS at the moment as for the next well we know the RS3 is coming, just depends if they discontinue anything or add to the range

Just quoting an Audi salesman. I asked why the RS4 isn't available at the moment and that was his answer, also said they've strangley wandered from their own rule this year.

It was an A8 :) but it was pretty impressive all the same .

Whatever it was he praised it anyway, as he did the RS4 down the mountain against those jumpers.

He does seem to love an M3 though
