Will the manual stand up to this use?
In my current underpowered, lightweight FWD car (Polo 6N) and in my previous cars, all fwd, I always used the same launching method. Where everyone else would just drop the clutch at the peak torque rpm, I like to keep the front tyres within their traction limits. So, I will rev at about peak torque, let off the clutch to just barely grabbing while holding the handbrake, then drop the handbrake and play with the throttle and clutch, not going fully open and fully released until there's full traction and I'm gaining momentum. At no point do I let the tyres go beyond a subtle, continuous screech.
I've been told by quite a few people that this is usually an AWD launch method. I searched and this style, or very close, is the usual reply given to people asking about launching with Haldex.
I can be a bit harsh on the gearbox, although I've never ever broken one. I do have a bit of a problem with rear engine mounts though, especially in the Polo. My favourite thing in a car next to cornering is 1st-2nd gear acceleration, so I tend to slam it into 2nd and drop the clutch instantly, while already at full throttle. I plan to do some work later on the S3, between 320-340bhp, whichever setup will give me the most usable torque and flattest curve. I don't mind having to upgrade the clutch/flywheel, but can the gearbox itself take launches at that power? Semislicks may be used during the warmer months of the year.
I want my first new car to last me a while and that means no drivetrain issues every other month. S-Tronic is not really an option as I like to be involved in my driving, even if it means losing a few tenths (I buy/build my cars for myself, not for stopwatches).
