Ahh could be different on fwd ? And avants
called a recovery truck after the Sharan's fuse box went on fire :keule:
Took the car out today as its been a while, bent a wheel on a pothole, broke the locking wheelnut, found the spare was flat! Luckily had an S4 alloy with a decent tyre knocking about, looks a bit weird at the moment! Attachment 19829
Put the FT badge on !!
It will be as the offset on 7J is ET45 iirc and mine are ET35 so just to see how much difference there is in them in terms of clearance !!
Is this any good? Not got any measuring equipment with me but looks about 9-10mm
That first pic is spot on will try take one similar and compare as aragorn tried his 7J ones on his brothers iirc and needed 15 spacers with the B6 S4 brakes so just seeing the differences obviously will be a different kettle of fish when the B6 S4's are on lol
Give us a shout if your getting rid of your old setup when the new one is done
Will do you after the complete setup front and rear ??
went and picked up a replacement for the Sharan.. its the seat version of the sharan with a blown headgasket which came at a good price.
On Friday really.
Fitted a myele control arm set to my mates new B5 quattro 2.5TDI (it's a 6 speed. Never they did one).
We had a discussion about the right and left, is it when you're on the car or looking at the car. I sheepishly agreed with him and rebuilt the arms.
All going well with intermittent showers. Wheels back on and ready to drive away, my mate got out of the car and said the wheels won't move.
Had a look and noticed we (or I) fitted the lower rear arms round the wrong way.
Oops. Then the heavens open, so we are rushing to swap the front arms, getting wet, sweating and wondering why they dont near side and off side.
But it's all on and he's happy. I still ache. My arms and legs are killing for some reason.
The only pic of the day.
He wants to do the rears soon.
I find it amusing when people cant decide which is left or which is right. The problem is your trying to relate it to you, rather than the car... The cars right side doesnt change depending on where you are.
If your looking at another person, their right is always their right, regardless of whether your infront or behind them, similarly, if your looking at a car, its right hand side is also always its right hand side, regardless of where your observing it from!
They dont do nearside/offside because that only works when everyone has a RHD car ;)
well after the normal daily grind stuff I done a few mot repairs to my mates C5 then once I got that out the road I got 90 minutes at the sharan and started getting the engine out.
so tomorrows jobs is. unbolt exhaust, drive shafts and engine mounts then its out.
need a trip to halfords though as I discovered I dont have spline tools for the drive shaft bolts so I gave up and packed up for the night.
Not done much really.
just got my Rev counter working on my facelift clocks...........yes I'm still buzzing about it. :jump:
MOTd the old girl today and she passed first time!
Removed my immobiliser because i can!
Put it back on again though as it was a sily thing to do!
Took delivery of a big bag of keys :D
Just replaced this section of coolant pipe
All thanks to this knackered o-ring
Could have just replaced the o-ring but Audi have changed the design of the pipe and put a much larger o-ring
So if you have an AJM engine and have a coolant leak that looks to be coming form the thermostat, it may actually be the pipe just to the right of the thermostat. I must have wasted 2 days fitting new gaskets and new pipe coming off the stat only to find this was the cause.
Changed the oil on the Avant first thing, then half way thru started to think it probably wasnt actually due a change... I usually change the oil every 5k, and i do it when the clocks hit 5000 or 0000, as its nice and easy to remember. Its just rolled over 140k so i set about changing it, but the filter and oil filler cap etc all just looked a bit too clean...
After thinking about it for a while, i think i was really late with the last change and did it at 137 or 138k, oh well not going to harm anything! I've also finished my big drum of oil now, so i need to try and find a supplier of more without being ripped off.
Then did some stuff around the house i've been meaning to do for ages, then decided the S4 was looking sorry for itself so gave it a wash:
It was so thick with grime that i'm going to have to go back over it with the pressure washer to get all the crap out of the nooks and crannies, and also probably give it a cut and polish to get the remainder of the crap off the paint. Note to others with laid up cars, give them a wash every month or two!
I also started stripping my new alloy uprights ready for their new bearings etc, managed to get the pinch bolt out the first one ok, but the second one has been rounded off by the PO, and also bent. Will streighted it as best i can at the weekend, then see if i can weld a nut onto the end to get it moving. Also realised earlier in the week that the seller had knocked two of the inserts out of the uprights when removing them from the car, sent him and email and hes come thru and posted me the inserts, which arrived today :)
What are the inserts for ??
and how come youre using alloy uprights and not steel S4 items ??
Alloy ones are lighter, and have the same S4 spacing. Sorta no-brainer if your changing them. Cost me £60 for the pair of alloy uprights. I also picked up a set of S4 spaced 312mm carriers for 30quid, much cheaper than the TT ones go for, and 312's are the biggest disks that will fit under my stock wheels.
The S4 has its original S4 uprights on it, the alloy ones are for my car. Its needing wheel bearings, front arms etc, so i decided to get the alloy uprights and fit them out with new bearings ready just to swap over.
The inserts are for the bottom balljoints. Instead of the balljoint bearing directly against the alloy, there is a steel insert pressed into the upright, and the taper seat is machined into the steel. Unfortunately when people get hamfisted with hammers trying to get the arms off, often the insert will come out the upright, rather than the arm coming out the insert. Audi dont sell the inserts on their own, so i was glad he still had the arms and posted me them!
My cars going to be getting some major work soon, lots of little jobs have been building up but they're all interrelated. Front CV's are shot due to me driving around with a split boot last year. Boots fixed but the joint now clicking badly. Front brake disks and pads need done. I have a noisy wheel bearing somewhere, so they need done. Front arms are starting to knock a bit so those need replaced.
I've got a 6 speed S4 box sitting that i've been wanting to fit, so i figure that given i need CV's anyway, and the subframe needs to come out to fit it, i might as well fit the box, with the S4 shafts, and do the arms and brakes at the same time. Unfortunately, i've now got most of the bits together just as the weathers starting to turn to ****. :(
Shed was due its MOT, so i nailed it in today with everything crossed. Theres a few bits of it i'm not happy with, that are in the pipeline to get replaced as i mentioned in my previous post, so i was really hoping it would scrape thru! Also just moved to this area, so not found a decent local place yet, so it was roulette to pick somewhere at random and try them out.
It Passed :)
The list of advisories they gave out was quite funny though:
Both front wipers are starting to smear the screen slightly
Both front headlamps loose but not insecure
Front and rear discs are corroded
Both front lower inner suspension arm bushes are slightly perished
Mines in for its MOT later it ran out on the 22nd august ..... Oooooppss lol
and it will pass with flying colours as i work there lol
had to put my cat back in though this morning ............. NOT :) !!
Whipped the sump off, stuck a better quality pump in for peace of mind, replaced the little one way valve in the filter housing, and fitted some B6 S4 brakes, Not a bad days work
got 4WD back yet?
Did it yesterday actually :-(. No quattro yet. I am going to replace my lifters for known good ones retime the cams to see if I can reduce this http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...ps60ddc7b6.jpg hopefully she'll take some more timing and therfore boost too. There's some work to be done on part throttle. Then its quattro time.... ;-)
Hes slacking, big time :P
They look the same?
Am I missing something?
Edit: ooooo larger disc area for the pad to grip?
Well today was gonna be the big service and Mr Muscle day but my prescription for my painkillers will not be ready til the morning and I can hardly move without these pills, I just pray that they are done
Replaced the NSR wheel bearing (still have a wa wa drone noise though :( )
Replaced the centre diff and housing for my old one as the seal went on the replacement box and my old one had a new one fitted not long ago !!
Replaced the OSR Diff seal
And test fitted my brakes as the calipers are bolted to the S4 uprights i threw a wheel over them with no disc the fronts clear
and whilst the rear upright was off i bolted a caliper spacer and s4 facelift caliper to it threw a wheel on and with no disc it catches only slightly so with disc and pads mounted it may just clear with 4-5mm off clearance so may keep the boleros now and refurb them after winter ill just need a new spare as thats a 7J ET45 iirc !!
I took my radio out and installed my comfort indicator kit. Despite the man at VW telling me it would not work on my A4 it does just fine ;) Probably took longer to remove the radio and trim surround than it did to do the rewiring.
Whilst that area was in bits I ran the cable for my CD changer that's been on the computer desk since I got it from my brother almost a year ago :keule:
