My 5855 mile RS3 went in today for the 'official' brake fix, also (they added at drop off) fuel pump recall ?? and software update.

A week ago i noticed NSF Tyre worn on inside edge (to point of needing new soon) and had it checked at local tyre place (guys i have dealt with for 20 years) on 4 wheel laser alignment - way to correct - adjust front sub frame alignment !

Dealer said that 4 wheel alignment is a 2 hour job. Umm.

I will let you know if they charge me to fix a problem that surely should be right on delivery - how can a sub frame slip out of alignment from the odd pot hole? Any thoughts?

OK, my pet subject as most of you regulars will know already.

Had my second Audi RS3 with 'official' AUDI brake-squeal-modifications over my pit today (don't ask) and the changes to this second RS3 are different to the first! I've said before that us owners are being used for development so stay with me here…

Car #1: This RS3 has:
1) New brake calipers and brake caliper mountings. The brake calipers are complete with 2-noise-damping bobbins per caliper.

IMPORTANT: these noise-damping bobbins are not intended to address the cause of the brake squeal, only the reaction i.e., the bl**dy noise you hear that is pi**ing OFF those who have it!

2) New brake pads.

3) New brake discs? No!

Note: this first car was NOT modified here in the UK but elsewhere; and I am not a liberty to provide the location other than it was in a financially viable part of the EU (so that rules out: France, Italy, Greece, Spain, etc.) However, this car retained its original brake discs (part number #8P0.615.301).

RESULTS: the owner reports that even with new brake calipers, etc., he still experiences brake squeal when braking typically at local supermarket speeds (5 to 0mph).

No authoritative advice from Audi but it may as well be: practice on-line shopping.

Car #2: This RS3 has:
1) New brake calipers (and brake caliper mountings) complete with 2-antivibration (noise-damping bobbins per caliper (actual photo).

2) New brake pads

3) New brake discs part number #8P0.615.301.B. Note the 'B' suffix, this is the later brake disc!

Note: this second car WAS recently modified here in the UK. I believe this car to be one of the first in the May 2013 Audi UK modification program. But it is NOT a RE-CALL as it is not a safety critical issue but will be applied as and when during the Audi Service system.

RESULTS: to early to say, but zero brake squeal at this time.

It frightens me that owners are being asked/told and/or made party to an agreement with Audi dealers (maybe Audi UK) to ensure they will NOT post/advertise details/results of this ongoing saga. BUT we're talking about AUDI here, not some Mickey Mouse company, but Audi.

My brakes do not squeal, as my own 'fix' remains effective!

Most owners/customers have spent (one way or another) between 35 and 50K on an Audi RS3 and these guys (Audi UK) are currently using a 'scattergun' resolution i.e., we'll look at your care if you promise (sign here) not to tell anyone else and if we do apply a 'fix' then (sign here) so that we know you’re a happy customer!

At NO time (even as I write) has Audi UK supplied a definitive action plan to resolve this issue.

A seriously GREAT car, but my marker is down that Audi/Brembo are now using owners to resolve/develop a resolution to Audi/Brembo brake squeal issues!

A year in numbers - running cost reality

I've owned my RS3 just over a year now and as you know I like doing the odd write up about the experience with the car. I thought we'd have a look...

I've owned my RS3 just over a year now and as you know I like doing the odd write up about the experience with the car. I thought we'd have a look at the year in numbers this time and the running cost reality of this machine. I'll explain my reasoning for the figures below so you can see the logic behind what I'm saying.

Running Cost Reality - £1.49 per mile based on 12,000 miles)

Purchase Price: £40,000 (I bought at 6 months old with 400 miles on the clock, invoice price new was £53,275)
Current Value: £28,750 (Glass's Guide Part Exchange Price)

Depreciation: £11,250 - 94 pence per mile (ppm) and by far the biggest cost
Fuel: £2914 (12,000 miles at 26mpg and £1.38.9 per litre average) 24 ppm
Finance Interest: £1900 - 16ppm
Tyres: £830 (full set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports) - 7ppm
Insurance: £350 - 3 ppm
Tax: £270 - 2 ppm
Gap Insurance: £270 - 2 ppm
Tracking subs: £110 - 1 ppm
Servicing £0 - 2 years 'free' servicing, but see the interest charge above to realise it's anything but free!

Total: £17904 (12,000 miles = 1.49 per mile)

Add the AP brake upgrade at £1550 and that becomes £1.63 per mile.

Had I bought the car from new at the full £53,75 invoice price the depreciation so far would be a massive £24,525! That would mean a cost of £2.60 or £2.74 per mile if you include the brake upgrade. Once more proving that adding options - £13,000 of options in this case - adds little when it comes to trade in time, the options add £1750 to the trade in price according to Glass's Guide.

Has it been worth it? Yes unquestionably. Sure sometimes the RS3 still pumps black exhaust soot across my drive and the brakes used to squeal occasionally but other than that it has been faultless and more importantly massive fun! The fun comes at a price of course and I thought people might be interested in the realities of running one of these glorious machines.

I have the black pack and therefore black exhausts so used a machine polisher on them to take the scratches out and they are either so clean now they shine more than they ever have done previously or I have polished them back to chrome. Just wondered how the black chrome finish was applied to them?
