I picked my brand new fully-specced A3 SB (1.8 TFSI S-tronic) on 26 April and I've been loving it...until recently. I started to get intermittent warning lights (Engine max speed: 4000rpm; ACC unavailable; Automatic start/stop: system fault; Audi pre sense: system fault). Following a visit to the Audi service department, an oil pressure switch was replaced and my car given a clean bill of health.

The next day, the warning lights were back! My new car was still ill although it appeared fine to drive. Another trip to Audi resulted in a courtesy car (A4) and a promise to fix the faults. A week later, I was informed that 'Milton Keynes' (UK's main service centre?) had recommended an engine change due to swarf (iron filings) in the oil. Obviously, there wasn't an engine in the UK so one was to be ordered from Germany.

So, I'm on day 23 of my new car and I've actually had it for precisely 13 days...thus:

Possession Stats
Me 57% - 43% Audi

The prognosis for the engine replacement is at least another week, forcing my possession down to 43% before I potentially get my car back (best case).

Light-heartedness aside, I'm getting extremely frustrated with the situation. Although Audi customer service has been good, I'm still without the car I paid for and my confidence in Audi and, more importantly, my car has been damaged irreparably. I can't stop thinking that its wrong for a brand new car to need a replacement engine after only 200 softly-driven miles. Considering the extensive technology that's present, I shudder to think of the myriad resultant faults down-line following the swap-out.

My options (probably not exhaustive):
1. Accept the engine change and move on.
2. Accept engine change, but fight for some form of compensation.
3. Refuse engine change and demand a new car to the same spec. Keep courtesy car for approx 4 months 'til replacement car arrives.

I'd be interested to hear what fellow forum members think of my situation and my options. I wonder if I'm being too nice to Audi here?!

Regards to all.
Kenny

I have the 1.4tfs 122ps S line Sportback:

Pros:

1. Build Quality - Cabin is superb and everything is of top quality. Lovely weighted feel to everything in the car.
2 S Line Sports Suspension - Yes i have it! It's very low but the ride quality is still pretty damn good unless you're going over a particularly bumpy road. The best part is virtually no body roll in corners and you feel like your on rails. Very sure footed even in the uber heavy rain today! The steering is very weighted and responsive (I'll post pics when flickr app decides to work on my phone or i can be bothered to connect it my pc :))
3. SD Sat Nav - Performs admirably and has found a lot of newer roads in my area. The extra display on the DIS is outstanding and really keeps you on track.
4. MMI and Audi Sound System - I've had £2k Focal Utopia systems with JL Audio w7 subs in the past the Audi S S is in my opinion better. True audiophile quality for £250! I'm thinking as it's tailored to the vehicle. Well done Audi!
5. Overall look of the car - A real head turner and everything about it reeks good design and quality.
6. Power of the new 1.4tfsi 122ps engine - My Partner has a 1.4tfsi 122ps a1 yet this thumps it in straight line. Seems overly powerful and you have to be careful with your speed. On a dual carriageway you regularly get near the 100mph mark without even realising it. In 30 zones your suddenly at 50mph, causing me to slow right back down. Very smooth power delivery even in efficiency. Rapid in dynamic.
7. Space - Had four adults in the car and everyone had plenty of space. I'm 6ft 4in and makes a change from people being cramped behind me. Lots of leg room and it's a very wide cabin.
8. Xenons and drls - Look cool as **** and turns many heads. Combined with the comfort pack it give very clear lighting in all conditions. Love the Led bulbs on the number plate, in the boot and the led rear lights and brake lights. Everything is very bright.

Cons:

1. No Reading lights in the front Cabin, non led centre lights, non led glove box, non led vanity mirrors, non led rear cabin lights - Ok so the leds maybe asking for bit much as i didn't get the interior lights pack but then why Led Boot lights?
Also no reading lights in a car the quality of an A3 S Line (the top trim level i may add!)!!! What's going on Audi? I don't think I've owed a car without individual reading lights before and I've had cars since 1999.
A minor bugbear but surely as everything else is led then the interior lights should be?! The interior lights pack should just be cup light rings, led footwell lights etc etc. Things i can live without but disappointed the rest of the lights aren't led.

To be honest though this is the only con i can think of. I've done 220 miles and my mpg is 36 - Not great but I've been in a lot of traffic and a lot of short journeys so i hope for better soon.

Overall it's everything i thought it would be and more. I love it already and just can't wait to get back in each and everytime.

Am getting a used A3 cab and seen a nice 12 plate one. Thing is that the leather sections of the seats look very 'loose'.
Every other one I have seen looks much more 'taught'. Is it me or does it look bad?
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Edit......Just realised I have posted in the wrong section  but guess its a general A3 question anyway.

Hi there,

Finally picked up my A3 1.4 tfsi Sport Sportback on Thursday. Order placed 16 February, so 3 months exactly.

Fairly standard spec with only extras:

Amalfi White
Comfort Pack
Xenon Light Pack which also includes the Interior Light Pack
SD Sat Nav (the free upgrade)
deselected Sport suspension.

Well first impressions are excellent. Dashboard/ interior is superb - those detractors of the looks are missing the point, and faultless quality.

Ive no regrets going for the 1.4 as I do only 8-9k miles per year and it is extremely quiet - hard to tell if it is running at times. Was a bit wary as I moved from a 163bhp diesel (Volvo D3). initial feel is that the petrol gives a better range of useable acceleration - trying to resist flooring the accelerator until the engine has had a chance to bed in a bit! With the diesel it was all or nothing, you either had power or you didn't .

Comfort is first class, happy that I deselected the Sport suspension and I think looks ok.

Standard audio sounds good once a bit of tweaking done with the settings!

Went out last night for a drive in the dark to test the lights. Boy, those Xenons are something else. Don't think now I would ever go back to halogens now that I've tried these. Found it a bit strange at first the way the lights turn with the car but soon got used to them. They light the road up really well.

Negatives? Struggling to think of any at this stage, hmm. No, none!! Here's hoping it stays that way.

Once the weather improves again (pouring at moment) and I figure out how, Ill post some photos.

Must go for another spin.

As a new member I wanted to say hi as I have been reading this forum for the last couple of days and have found it very useful! I'm currently an A1 driver and was looking to upgrade to the A1 SB, but in the end settled on an A3 SB which I purchased this week! I was going to spec out a sport model but the dealer found a new S line model in their system. It's got quite a few extras on it, some of which I wouldn't have normally specced, but I went ahead and bought it.

I have gone for an S Line SB 2.0 TDI in Daytona Grey with Fine Nappa Leather, Extended Interior Finish, Comfort Pack, f/h Door Mirrors, Black Roof Rails, Tyre Pressure Sensor, Electric & Heated Seat with Lumbar Support, Technology Pack.

I would have preferred a better audio system over leather seats but coming from an A1 with standard audio, the way I see it, at least I am not downgrading the sound! It doesn't have DAB - does anyone know if this can be retrofitted by the dealer?

My current car is Daytona Grey so it would have been nice to have got a different colour, but to be honest you can't know the Daytona - the awesome colour that it is! Would have specced glacier white! :)

I should be collecting my car early next week but I'll be out of the country Mon-Weds so I'll probably go and collect it Thursday/Friday ready for the bank holiday weekend :)

Test drive in a new Golf VII

I've had a Golf VII 1.6TDI DSG SE for the day today and I must say I was not that impressed. It was obviously well down on power and torque compared...

I've had a Golf VII 1.6TDI DSG SE for the day today and I must say I was not that impressed. It was obviously well down on power and torque compared with my current A3. It had a 7-speed DSG without and steering wheel paddles which was strange as I use the paddles all the time when I'm driving. It seemed to need a lot more gear changing but that may well be down to the lower torque level. The rear suspension was the torsion bar type rather than the multi-link version and again did not seem as comfortable as my A3 despite both being SE versions.

The seats were fine as was the steering and I liked the slightly fatter steering wheel. I tried the new Adaptive Cruise Control and found it very strange but something I could probably get used to, but I'm not sure I would order it over a normal cruise control if I have the choice. No problem with the electronic hand-brake and it was fitted with hold-assist which seemed to work well.

When I took the Golf back I called in to the Audi dealer just down the road and sat in a new A3. The general quality of the interior of the Golf was good but I think I'm going to have to eat my words and say I don't think it's quite as good as the new A3. I quite liked the touch screen but I have to admit it did seem to have a mind of it's own at times scroling sideways when I just tapped a different radio station button. I'm not a great fan of the MMI system on the new A3 but, as I rarely play the radio or any music when I'm driving and would not buy a new A3 with built-in Sat/Nav preferring to stick to my TomTom, it's not something a would need to use that often.

All I need now is an A3 2.0TDI Sportback SE s-tronic to test drive and a similar version of the new A3 Saloon. Obviously the Saloon is not going to be avaialble to try until around September and 2.0TDI Sportbacks with s-tronic are a bit thin on the ground at the moment. It's a good job my current A3 is only 15 months old so still plenty of time to continue to test various models.

Just took delivery of my new Audi A3 Sportback 2.0L TDi S-Line yesterday. Have to say it's mega!!!

One problem I'm already having though is that it won't recognise my ipod classic when connected. Recognises my mates iphone no problem so wondering if anyone has had the same issue with the new A3 or if anyone has any idea how I might fix it?

Cheers
