My girlfriend was on the verge of getting scammed at the weekend.

It's a two phase scam, and a pretty simple but clever one. This is what happens:

You receive a text on your phone from a number that you don't recognise. The text will say something along the lines of "Did you receive my new number? Sarah".

Here they are relying on the probability that you will know someone else who goes by this common name (or another common name, if they choose to use it). Anyway, my girlfriend does have a friend/acquaintance called Sarah, so she replied saying that she had not received her new number.

The next text she got from Sarah explained that she had lost her phone and if my girlfriend would mind sending her the mobile numbers of anybody that they both know so she can start to rebuild her contacts list.

Still not suspicious my girlfriend sent Sarah the numbers of the two people that they both know.

About half an hour passed and my girlfriend received another text from Sarah asking for a "favour".

The text said "Can you do me a favour please? I can't get to the shops today but need some credit for my phone. Can you buy me some credit and send me the code. Will pay you back tomorrow."
This isn't the exact wording, the actual text probably sounded a bit more genuine.

There was a bit more texting between the two of them and then my girlfriend realised something wasn't right so she contacted the Sarah she knows on the number she has always had for her and found out it was not her she had been texting.

Basically what the person is doing is sending out loads of texts to random numbers claiming to be Sarah, in the hope that some of the recipients would know a Sarah and send back the contact details of other people who know a Sarah.
The fake Sarah would then be armed a list of mobile numbers of people who definitely know a Sarah and will then send them texts asking for them to top up her mobile phone with credit.
Proof of this is... my girlfriend contacted one of the people whose mobile number she had just given to the fake Sarah, and they had already been contacted asking for a "favour" too.

I guess once they have enough credit topped up to the SIM they would then sell it for cheap... i.e. selling a SIM with £100 credit for £30 or so. They've probably got loads of SIMs all on the go at once, scamming people.

Anyway, luckily my girlfriend realised something was up before it was too late, but reading the texts it was very convincing that it was genuine. It's only with hindsight you start to see little things that don't quite make sense.

Just a heads up.

Got my license 4 years ago and I seem to have developed a heavy foot. I drive too damn fast on the motorway, I'm surprised I haven't been caught yet. I try to ban myself from the third lane, but it doesn't last, something will set me off, like for one I'll see a nice car zoom past me, and I just begin to follow it, soon or later I find my myself overtaking it at license losing speed, too late to back out now, I'm committed. Zero self control is the department :( Any advice?

I find that calling me at 9:02am and trying to scam me is not the best way to get on my good side.

Fair enough, you might have decided on a life of low-base crime is the way to go and even better when you are calling from India to rip off the Imperialistic West. You are a man of passion about what you do and you don’t want to be seen to be shirking by the boss (and I’m sure there is a Boss) so starting early is good. It does show a level of commitment that has to be applauded and somewhat respected, if I didn’t know where the phone call was going and that’s only 2pm in India.

Ring Ring (ok phones don’t go ring ring, but I didn’t know what else to put)

I pick up the phone:

Strong Indian accent man: Hello I’m calling from Microsoft (oh yeah :) )

Me: Hello

Strong Indian accent man: Hello I’m calling from Microsoft

Me: Hello again

This went on for a little while but I did feel that maybe he had lost his script and was playing for time or this was a new version of the scam that I hadn’t seen (heard) that was just being done to keep me on the phone while someone stole my house.

Strong Indian accent man: Your computer is sending our server messages that it has a virus and has lots of errors.

Me: Ok that sounds really bad (I always find it very hard not to just start screaming at this point)

Strong Indian accent man: Yes sir, you are the owner of the computer right? I need you to go to the computer and look at the keyboard. Once at the computer I need you to press the Windows key +r and I will show you the error.

Sure enough and good to his word he showed me the event log and then some other files that are found on every PC, that he said were very dangerous to me and my computer and I had to close the folder very slowly and carefully.

I don’t know if you have every tried to close a folder on a computer slowly and carefully but I would be grateful if you could tell me how as every time I tried ‘click’ and it snaps shut. Well I wasted about 5 mins of his time trying to close this file ‘slowly and then carefully’. I then tried putting the two together but it made no difference. The guy at the other end was starting to get a little ratty with me and told me off for not taking the issues seriously and the danger that my computer was in and I would have to buy a new one.

He now suggested that now he had shown me the errors and the only way forward was to escalate my case to another member of the team who could login into my PC and fix these errors. This was the bit I was looking forward to. I like people who come up with clever ideas that find ways around a problem that you shouldn’t or can’t just walk through. It’s a little of what I have done for most of my life at work.

I should point out that I knew what this was all about and from the moment that he said “Hello” or that’s a lie… from the moment he said “Hello I’m from Microsoft” so there was no way that I’m going to load anything from them or even visit any sites they want me to visit. I suggest that if you get one of these people on the phone you just hang up. Don’t be surprised if they do phone back. This is a very successful scam and makes a lot of money. It’s worth phoning back to tell the person that they have made a mistake, just in case they let you in.

Now if I was from Microsoft and I was going to remote access you PC I think I would have a few little bits of software that I could use to get in. I wouldn’t tell you to go to the teamviewer.com website and try and get you to download and install a 3rd party application. I have to say at this point I felt betrayed, let down, cheated. We had built up a relationship; almost a friendship and it turned out to be all lies and false promises. I had given up my time to listen and sometimes do what he said and in return what do I get? An unsophisticated sledge hammer to open the door approach of an entry. No nice little Trojan or such like, not even a “Please can you tell me your IP and we’ll try and hack you”. NO! Just a “Please can you be stupid enough to download this piece of software and then give me the ID and password to let me in”.

I’m sorry to say that at this point I said a few bad words, a few of which might mean I burn in hell for a while. What did he say? Well as mentioned before this was obviously a man of dedication and resolve who when he set out to finish something, makes sure it’s finished. He protested for a few seconds and then hung up.

This is just one of the many scams that people try and pull on you if you are connected to the internet. If anyone calls you and want you to give out information such as user names date of birth or even the most innocuous information think very long and hard before you do.

I hope that no one has fallen for this but if you have don’t feel silly they are very good at doing this it’s how they make a living and do get your PC sorted out. Not only do you risk losing lots of time and money but it also put the websites and it’s visitors at risk.

Many thanks

So there I was driving down Leeds Road in Bradford with tyres for our Bradford depot and a silver A3 just tried shooting out from being parked at the side of the road, my superhero reactions avoided a collision which most people wouldn't have. As I went past I did the usual swearing and signs to the Asian driver!, 50 yards further down (the A3 behind) me I stopped to turn right in to our depot.

I looked in the mirrors (as ya do) noticed the drivers door open on the A3 behind. I was thinking oh here we go, luckily I found a gap and turned in to the yard of the depot.

I got out of the van looked across the road, the A3 had all 4 doors open rolling down the road with no occupants, looked a few yards up and 3 Asian lads with machete's scrambling for a massive pile of cash on the floor that one of them had dropped from a bank robbery on a bank just another few yards up! they then fan back to the A3 and made a kinda pants getaway kangarood a couple of times.

I then found out that someone had got hurt in the robbery and just behind me they hit a golf and run someone over!

That it, just needed to share that.

Hope the victims are all ok and no doubt the owner of the 8P A3 Silver 4 door will be getting a call soon saying "unfortunately your car has been involved in..........."

Anyone else had any action? lol

I'd like to share my recent trip to France and Belgium with you guys :)

I'm a huge WW1/WW2 nerd, and it is of massive interest to me. Last week I went across to Belgium to see some of the more interesting sites, I took my camera and had an amazing time.

We went across on the channel tunnel, and made our way through France into Belgium.

First stop was Lijssenthoek Commonwealth war graves, during the First World War, the village of Lijssenthoek was situated on the main communication line between the Allied military bases in the rear and the Ypres battlefields. Close to the Front, but out of the extreme range of most German field artillery, it became a natural place to establish casualty clearing stations. The cemetery was first used by the French 15th Hopital D'Evacuation and in June 1915, it began to be used by casualty clearing stations of the Commonwealth forces.

From April to August 1918, the casualty clearing stations fell back before the German advance and field ambulances (including a French ambulance) took their places.

The cemetery contains 9,901 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, 24 being unidentified. There are 883 war graves of other nationalities, mostly French and German, 11 of these are unidentified. There is 1 Non World War burial here.

This picture shows a third of the cemetery, a shocking introduction to my tour.

As with almost all WW1 Commonwealth cemeteries there is a section of the site dedicated to the German burials.

Despite Germany only making one payment towards the Commonwealth maintenence towards their WW1 war graves in 1921 these sites have been beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth, with GB making over 90% of the pro-rata contributions to these graves. Enough respect cannot ever be paid to the skilled Belgian workers who look after these historic sites.

-

Next stop was to pay respect at the resting place of Captain Noel Chavasse, the only double Victoria Cross winner of WW1 and quite frankly one of the most honerable characters of the war.

The original entry by the war office for Captain Chavasse's efforts -
Victoria Cross

Chavasse was first awarded the VC for his actions on 9 August 1916, at Guillemont, France when he attended to the wounded all day under heavy fire. The full citation was published on 24 October 1916 and read:[6]

Captain Noel Godfrey Chavasse, M.C., M.B., Royal Army Medical Corps.

For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty.

During an attack he tended the wounded in the open all day, under heavy fire, frequently in view of the enemy. During the ensuing night he searched for wounded on the ground in front of the enemy’s lines for four hours.

Next day he took one stretcher-bearer to the advanced trenches, and under heavy shell fire carried an urgent case for 500 yards into safety, being wounded in the side by a shell splinter during the journey. The same night he took up a party of twenty volunteers, rescued three wounded men from a shell hole twenty-five yards from the enemy’s trench, buried the bodies of two Officers, and collected many identity discs, although fired on by bombs and machine guns.

Altogether he saved the lives of some twenty badly wounded men, besides the ordinary cases which passed through his hands. His courage and self-sacrifice, were beyond praise.

His second VC was officially recorded with this entry -

Chavasse’s second award was made during the period 31 July to 2 August 1917, at Wieltje, Belgium; the full citation was published on 14 September 1917 and read:[7]

War Office, September, 1917.

His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of a Bar to the Victoria Cross to Capt. Noel Godfrey Chavasse, V.C., M.C., late K.A.M.C., attd. L’pool R.

For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty when in action.

Though severely wounded early in the action whilst carrying a wounded soldier to the Dressing Station, Capt. Chavasse refused to leave his post, and for two days not only continued to perform his duties, but in addition went out repeatedly under heavy fire to search for and attend to the wounded who were lying out.

During these searches, although practically without food during this period, worn with fatigue and faint with his wound, he assisted to carry in a number of badly wounded men, over heavy and difficult ground.

By his extraordinary energy and inspiring example, he was instrumental in rescuing many wounded who would have otherwise undoubtedly succumbed under the bad weather conditions.

This devoted and gallant officer subsequently died of his wounds.

Brandhoek Commonwealth cemetry is the location, this is the information board which greets you upon entry -

All Commonwealth cemeteries have a safe which holds the historical burial records of the men who lay there, a handy tool for identifying any personal connection or graves of specific interest.

Brandhoek is located between to houses, and backs onto the back gardens. As with most "small" Commonwealth sites.

During the First World War, Brandhoek was within the area comparatively safe from shell fire which extended beyond Vlamertinghe Church. Field ambulances were posted there continuously.

Until July 1917 burials had been made in the Military Cemetery, but the arrival of the 32nd, 3rd Australian and 44th Casualty Clearing Stations, in preparation for the new Allied offensive launched that month, made it necessary to open the New Military Cemetery. The New Military Cemetery No 3 opened in August and continued in use until May 1918.

Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No 3 contains 975 First World War burials.

-

Next stop was Essex Farm, a very well established site which holds one of the youngest official burials of the Great War. A 14 year old child who lied about his age. A chilling tale.

The land south of Essex Farm was used as a dressing station cemetery from April 1915 to August 1917. The burials were made without definite plan and some of the divisions which occupied this sector may be traced in almost every part of the cemetery, but the 49th (West Riding) Division buried their dead of 1915 in Plot I, and the 38th (Welsh) Division used Plot III in the autumn of 1916.

There are 1,200 servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. 103 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate 19 casualties known or believed to be buried among them.

The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.

It was in Essex Farm Cemetery that Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae of the Canadian Army Medical Corps wrote the poem ' In Flanders Fields' in May 1915.

The 49th Division Memorial is immediately behind the cemetery, on the canal bank.

Essex farm features preserved bunkers, which go a very small way to showing the shocking conditions of the Great War. Can you imagine being treated for your wounds in these areas, with costant mortar fire, little to no pain killers or drugs, mud, dirt, disease and death all around. Unimaginable in todays society, again the sacrifices and suffering must never be forgotten.

This is a large bunker...
