2.5tdi air filter - k&n

Evening folks, took the air box off tonight to replace headlight bulb and noticed that the air filter is not in the best condition.

is it worth replacing with a k&n panel filter or do the oils in them mess up the maf (i know some hot wire types don't like it but not sure about my A6).

Mainly thinking of long service life rather than gaining an instant +300bhp lol, or shall i just go for good old oem.

oem all day long i bought one a few years back and if you hold it up to light you can see through it. thats how it lets more air in, there are actual holes in the filter

tbh they both work the same niether is better, and wont really give gains. Just the uprated ons can be cleaned...

for the money will probably stick with oem, looking at Eurocarparts stuff as they do a bosch one for £9.50 compred to about 45-50 for k&n

Having just bought my Allroad and seeing it's due for a service, the air-filter is right up on my list of things to do. I tend to keep cars for a long time, so a cleanable air-filter appeals to me as it's cheaper in the long run and requires less maintenance (most flow better even when part-clogged than a paper element can manage).

My options then are: K&N (cotton gauze); Pipercross (foam); ITG (triple-density foam - if they do one). I've used ITG before on a 4x4 racer and it was fantastic, so it'll be my preference if they make a replacement panel element, but it's not shown in their catalogue.

Does anybody here have any experience of these filters and is able to offer any advice?

So I bought an ITG air filter, part number WB447 for most A6s including the Allroad, and fitted it just under a week ago.

It's (allegedly) made of three different densities of foam, although it looks more like two to me, and was an easy fit in the standard Allroad airbox. It was oiled in the factory and - unlike many after-market filters - should last its entire life without washing or oiling again. According to the instructions, all that's needed is an occasional "agitation" with a vacuum cleaner from underneath to encourage the dirt to fall out, and that's it! For those worried about oil getting places it shouldn't, this may offer some reassurance?

I'm not going to talk about any massive performance increase since fitting it (in a 2 ton car with a 2.5 diesel and no rolling-road to test on that would be nonsense) but I have seen an improvement in the fuel economy. I don't have any accurate figures, but the car's on-board computer is suggesting an extra 1 mpg or so over the last tank-full.

If you want one, don't bother phoning ITG: they simply passed me on to Merlin Motorsport who quoted me full RRP. A 30-second look on Google (for ITG WB447) got me £10+ off that, and the filter arrived next day having been drop-shipped direct from the ITG warehouse and with their logo on the postage franking label!

The P&P was extortionate incidentally as postage cost £2.45 and ITG charged £6.50; the packaging was merely a single sheet of brown paper taped to the box, so £4.05 for doing that seems a bit steep!

Still, I'd recommend the filter.

Went with the OEM Bosch from Euro Car Parts in the end, £9.50 and free yes that's FREE delivery (very rare and great service - not quick but you can pay extra for next day etc) perfect fit and top quality
