NEW TAILPIPES/BACKBOXES

Im after a nice (possibly custom made) set of tailpipes to replace the horrible looking standard crap thats on my 3.0 A4, anyone know anywhere that is reasonably cheap in the midlands area?

I have spoken to a few places and most have recommended i change my back boxes which would give me better pipes as well as a nice 3.0 v6 performance tone.

X2 BACK BOXES WITH VAT& FITTING £240.00

But im not sure whether to change the boxes or just go for pipes i dont want the car sounding like a 15 year olds corsa, anyone already done this that could comment on the possible noise?

Nevertheless i got it sorted today, £100 all in for new tailpipes (ALOT OF WELDING REQUIRED), finally those nasty diesel pipes have gone.

Pictures arent great and look much better in the flesh but you get the idea.

I had mine done, tho i already had a full stainless system.



As for the sound with the TDi you get more of a howl from the turbo, i find it quite cool, it only sounds awefull if you remove all the boxes in the system, which some people do to unleash a few bhp.

But you can bearly hear it only when you floor it on full boost with windows down etc.

Yes mate they are but i had the logo underneath as i didnt want to see it, looks much better plain!

You dont think they stick out to much do you, im still not 100% but i suppose it keeps the black smoke and crap away from my bumper.

Anyone got any advice for cleaning these or stopping them from rusting, ive heard covering them in vasaline works.

I would have thought covering them in vaseline would make it more likely for the sh1t to stick to them...? I wonder if using something like Poorboys wheel sealant or similar would protect them from the soot sticking, that and regular cleaning

I must admit that personally I wouldn't choose to have them sticking out that much, not because I dislike them, but because IMO it makes it look a bit aftermarket, and personally I prefer OEM look

Ok having performed much research on keeping chrome tailpipes clean and protected i have taken advice from numerous sources and made my own procedure.

1) Wash pipes with hot water and detergent (fairy etc) as thsi breaks through grease and oil with ease.

2) Once clean and dry apply 1 coat of poor boys wheel sealent, allow to dry and buff off with polishing cloth.

3) To finish the job and apply greater protection apply one coat of WD-40 or GT-85 to the whole of the tailpipe, this will create a waterproof barrier preventing rust, as obviously water cannot penetrate oil and will also aid in the removal of soot and crap.

So hopefully this will work and be easier to clean next time.

Doesnt matter because it should just wipe off, im more interested in the rain and rust than abit of dust. wahay that rhymes!

Hey Dazmo, you don't need to bother with WD-40 or Vaseline. If you use a metal sealer/polish they will not rust at all (stainless does not rust anyway). You will keep the look of the car and they will only need polishing every couple of months. What's the point of spending the money then covering them in crap and spoiling the way they look????

To be honest mate you dont see the wd-40 it just wipes off and leaves a thin layer so doesnt affect the look.

However what metal polishes etc can you recommend mate as sounds like a better idea.

To be honest i just used autoglym paint renovator to clean my tips, then put normal polish on them. Any soot just washes off now. Metal polish is available from polished bliss on this forum or Autoglym and meguiars metal polish is available from car spares shops. If you get some on now while they are clean, they should sparkle after every wash. You may aswell make the most of them.

You paid £100 and they arn't stainless steel tips????

If so you got ripped! as OEM are stainless steel, at least in 1998 it was.
