fuel pump

I've just replaced the fuel pump on my 80 1.9tdi. the problem I have is after cranking the engine the fuel is goin through the pump and out of the return pipe and not to the injectors, is there any way that you prime the pump. any thanks for any advise

Bleed system just by opening injector pipe unions on top of injectors a couple of turns then turn over engine until fuel bleeds through.
