    Question A3 2.0TDI SPTBK 140PS

The car has been totally sound up until the 3 year warranty came and went. The car is an 05 model and has done very nearly 50K. It has developed a sound that would suggest the timing belt is slipping. But on closer inspection it seems to be coming from a round "thing" that is located on the left hand side of the engine near the timing belt. This thing just goes backwards and forwards very quickly and squeaks and sounds like a taxi when low revs are put through the engine. Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? All help welcome!

Any chance of a photograph of component at fault? Is it ran off ribbed belt?

does the cambelt go round this round "thing"?
could be your cambelt tensioner, had one go on my old 1.9TDi with lots of squeaks and a burning smell.
fortunately had it sorted under an extended warranty with no detriment to the engine.

its the auxallary drive belt, it should be replaced after 40k or so, as its stretches, the auto tesnioner cant cope with the the extra length and its starts to squeak, the bobbing backwords and forwards is fine, the tensioners a idle roller on a strong spring, as the belt goes round it viabrates and flexes.

swap the belt for a new one and from what youve said it should be fine

Thanks for all your help, full marks go to M7R. 6 months later the alternator pulley fell off whilst doing 70 on the M3. The car lastest 120 miles before dying just outside the house!
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene".
