How do you know when your catalytic converter (cat) is NOOO GUD!!!

Not sure if there is any way of testing a CAT for a Diesel engine car. It is not a MOT failure if you remove it. You will get about 2 extra BHP.
My CAT fell apart in the metal casing causing it to block the exhaust pipe. It has been removed for the last 3 years without problems.
