    Difficulties starting engine on a slope?

    Hi all

    Over the last few weeks I have been having a problem starting my car when it has been left overnight on a steepish drive, facing downhill.

    After 10 hours in the company car park on the level, it always starts first time.

    Has anybody else experienced similar?

    Have left it facing uphill tonight to see whether there's a difference.

    well one would think the fuel is draining back into the tank, maybe you're non return valve is faulty.

    Thanks - I considered some form of fuel valve, but if the return valve were faulty, surely it would drain back into the tank when parked uphill, rather than downhill...?

    DOES THE B6 A4 TDI HAVE A NON RETURN VALVE? IF SO WHERE?

    Hi Nivagh,
    I drive a 2002 audi a6 avant 1.9 tdi 130bhp. I park my car on the drive which is sloped. The car starts ok but runs like a dog. After parking it on the flat for an hour or so the power returns but fades after about 10 minutes driving. This problem has always been there only am just beginning to notice its effects. I have been told that there are drains leading fuel back to the tank and these can be fitted with non return valves to hold the fuel in. I think my trouble is caused by an air lock somewhere in the fuel system. Trouble is i had a garage check all fuel lines and they found nothing. Another garage checked all vaccuum lines and they found nothing. And another garage tuned my ecu to inject more diesel at determined times which I initially thought had fixed the problem. He is preparing test equipment to test acceleration speed and distance covered after leaving car on slope and after leaving car on level.This he will do on May 25th so will keep you posted on his findings.

    Hi nivagh,

    I've had this exact problem. Turned out to be really simple. The spill pipes connect the injectors to each other. They are covered in a woven hose but are translucent plastic. Several of mine were split at the end causing air to be sucked in instead of diesel. There was also quite a bit of diesel leaking out. Have a sniff around the engine bay and if you can smell derv, check out the spill pipes. Cost me 5 after I'd called out the AA to restart the engine after flattening my battery trying !

    Thanks but no smell of fuel under the lid. have resolved the problem by not parking facing uphill!
    Sometimes it takes two goes to start, when it has been switched off, eg. at long traffic lights etc. I've just learned to live with it.
