What's the point, get a 130 and chip it to 160-170, much cheaper too.

The VW 150 PD was released about mid summer ish, the A3 130 Quattro was released about May, if Audi had waited another 2 months I reckon most would have gone for the 150 Quattro, I certainly would.

Chipping both 130 & 150 by the likes of Revo, Abt etc are producing very similar linear performance curves.

So taking your viewpoint Richard, it would make sound sense to buy the 130 & chip.

TF for hindsight eh!

[/ QUOTE ]Ah except the 150 has uprated con-rods that could then be chipped to say 180/200bhp, not bad for a diesel, and just think of all that torque

Re: Why dont Audi

I would have thought they could do better than that!
The VW marine 150 diesel can be upped to 220 with minor mods. Does it use the same 5cyl block?

Re: Why dont Audi

Sorry being stupid!
No cat, no exhaust restrictions, increased turbo and inlet cooling, and a supercharger.
For the question though, if you can fit a Supercharger to a Turbo D Marine block and use it to increase inital power, delay turbo cut in until later in the rev range for more torque and hp, then why cant we do the same to a Car engine?
Anyone?

No, a 4 cyl block for this engine. I think star got excellent torque figures? almost 270lbft

but to be honest if a 150bhp engine could safely be upgraded to 180bhp then why arnt the manufacturers doing it, the term i hear a lot is that car manufacturers dumb dowm the power level, thats ******, the manufacturer knows what the customer wants and thats more power, they just know if they squeeze another 40bhp out, they will have a lot of engine changes under warranty.

[/ QUOTE ]

you could say that about any engine though. Obviously engines are made to last but because its so easy to get more power out of a pd this is probably why they get abused by too much power. What was actually wrong with them do you know?

VAG did squeez out another 20 bhp out of the 90tdi to the 110 with no engine difference (apart from obvious stuff) and I know a lot of 110 chipped to 150 with no problems and have lasted ages. I guess the driver might have a lot to do with the problem aswell.

This is first time Iv heard of pd's failing from just chipping though

Hey if you'd seen the talbot sunbeam (lotus version) you wouldnt be laughing. What a rear wheel drive monster!
Had one round my way when i was a kid. And i actually wanted one!! Although the BMW 2002 Turbo was my car of choice a kid.

Top gear had nice wee bit on Diesels v. Petrol for small hot hatches. I'd definitely look at a diesel next time round.

LOL Yes but the talbot express is a derived milk float with a dodgy front wheel drive engine.

No british involvement with the express lol, I may of respected the mechanics veiws if it was a lotus sunbeam.

The Fabia VRS vs the Cooper? Hardly fair, the VRS has a ****load more torque on paper and should of trounced it - was far closer in real life than it was on paper. CooperS vs VRS would of been fairer power wise.. and we all know what would of won.

Re: Why dont Audi

One thing you can be sure of a diesel 150bhp VW Golf standard or chipped would not impact on the sales of the S3. If you think it would then you could not have driven a high performance petrol car. Diesels are good on mid-range power but that is where it ends. A S3 in standard form will out perform the Golf in any area. Speed, acceleration, overtaking performance, quality, residual value, looks. The Golf is the most over-rated piece of sh*t on the road today and that includes the new GTI. Slowest and heaviest in its class, with equipment taken from Audi, mainly the fantasic DSG gearbox. Time for you VW GTI guys to admit that VW were spot on with the original GTI but they have milked you sukers for the last 30 years on cars that do not live up to the hype. i bet guys like you think that when a bloke walks passed you when you are out shopping with the wife that the world will end next week you believe it. In the same way you believe a Golf is a GTI. Wake up and come back to Earth

not quite true the PD160 has far superior cooling than the 150 with a larger FMIC and a different air intake.
