Hi, new on this forum as just bought a audi a3 2.0 tdi sport 2004 ..

Drove home 200milles , when put foot down hard turbo would go off, then turn ignition on and off would be ok again ..
Pull home into the village , boom! big noise coming from under the bonnet, loads of white smoke from exhuast and car barely moved..
Turned off and had a look nothing 2 see at dark , drove it home, slowly .. Seems like the turbo has gone or something?
never seen so much smoke coming from a car before, and looked like some was coming from rear of the engine were the turbo is located ?
Whats next, and is it defiantly the turbo ? could be any more damage , costs etc

appreciate any help advice etc

thank you

first remove the turbo, and clean the intercooler as any metal pieces detached from the turbo would most likely stack there not to mention the oil... if you aren't sure if it's the turbo just remove the turbo inlet pipe, grab the shaft and you will definitely feel significant play if it's gone... I would also check oil level, oil pressure etc. to make sure it wasn't cause by oil starvation or some dirt or carbon residue in the oil, inspect the oil sump, oil intake screen, oil feed and oil filter housing... New oil, filer and oil feed would be recommended before fitting new turbo...

Sounds like over - boost. The big boom could have been the hose popping off the intercooler. The car then over fuels leading to the white smoke. AA man fixed mine with a new hose (worn metal fitting) new clips and a self tapping screw!
