    Getting it back Thursday.
Also having viscous coupling on fan done as it is locked in all the time. Will have to take the credit card out for a quiet lie down I think, looks like the total bill could be around 1800.

Are you still on the FJ at the moment? If so and your bike is black... were you on the 701 Monday morning? I think I passed you on my way to the lakes.

The roads were stupid slippy.. I was driving a works passat and was all over the place.. cold too at that time..
Coming back to Audi with an A3 Tdi Sportback Quattro... but the 220bhp T5 was epic....

    Hi There,

Sorry to hear about your engine troubles.

I know you were after power curves for the 180hp engine.

This is my 2001 Audi A6 Avant (180hp) after I rempapped it.

Sorry a bout the poor quality.

    Thanks Mark

Yep that was me, its dark blue and throwover panniers. My first trip up there for a while, my last week up here is working in Edinburgh so i get to ride it for a week. I was having a good morning, my leather trouser zip had broken and my washed waterproofs hadn't dried out so I was wearing my stinky old Frank Thomas Aquasuit (red and gray). One very expensive hot sweaty 30mins jumping in and out of 4 different pairs in Hein Gericke later I now have some new trews. Lets see if they last 20 years like the Frank Thomas ones just did.

It would appear you did a lot better than me, I only got 196 on Star Performnance's dyno. Have you got a before tuning curve too? If i'm comparing results on different dynos i like to see what the difference before and after is to try and minimise the variation between dynos. Unfortunately I don't think i'm going to get the rebuilt engine on Star's dyno, it won't be run in before I go to Falmouth. How much are you going to rush me for your chip then?

I don't have the before as the Car wasn't Dyno'd before the ramap, because I'm a mobile tuner and only have access to the Chipped UK Dyno when I go up there. If I'm up there soon, I will put the car back to standard and run it again to get a before as well. This was Done on a Remap and Rolling Road Day for VWAUDIFORUM and I was a bit pushed for Time.

Take your Time mate, Run the rebuilt engine in first then if you want It remapped, we can find you a Chipped UK dealer down your way as I don't think you will want to be driving all the way to London to have this done. But if you do, I'd be more than happy to help you out.

Also Trying to organise a Day for the memebers on here to come to Chipped UK for Remap, details are in my signature.

    Cheers, Mark

Ok keep me posted on the "before" figures. With the mileage I do I don't think running in will take very long. I'm interested in another 30hp at the top end, but critical to every day use is sorting out the standard "hole" up to about 1800rpm. The Turbochip made a noticeable difference sorting this out, it now starts pulling at 12-1400 rpm, but I notice your power curve chart starts at 2000rpm. The Turbochip peak torque figure is down on yours but is achieved at 2660rpm, well below your 3720rpm. I would want to drive your car before I went ahead to swap chips just to make sure i'm not gaining peak power at the expense of the effortless surge at lower revs. Provided of course that the rebuild hasn't changed it all .....

We're back on the road boys. Need about 1500 miles running in and an oil change and then hopefully we'll be back to normal service.

    And off again.

Tried to reverse into the drive on Friday night and there was a thump from underneath and bingo no gears. Ex Audi technician AA man reckoned the gear stick to box linkage has come adrift , so cue recovery truck to Truro Audi.

Had done about 1200 miles and was starting to give it a bit of welly. It had felt a bit tight to start with or maybe i was just being cautious. However now seems like the power is there like it used to be. Pootling along in Cornish traffic is not its favourite place and whilst giving it a boot to get past traffic it is chucking out more smoke than it used to. We'll get Truro to change the oil and filter while its in and check the settings.

Ok here we go again. The gear linkage had come undone so that's been reconnected. Oil and filter changed. No other problems, and Truro Audi had it ready, get this, 2 days before they said they could do it. Still in shock. Anyway now starting to boot it around Cornwall, still feels a bit tight at the bottom end but is revving OK.

Had a bit of a thrash down the lanes with an Evo at the weekend, overtook me coming out of a village and seemed to be trying quite hard to lose the old diesel slug bucket. Have to admit that i was using most of the road and the mountain bikes were flying around inside the back of the car somewhat, but only lost a 100m or so over a mile or two. Smirk. Need to get to know the roads some more.
Fuel economy is well down, have a couple of tankfuls to calc but looks like 29 or 30 instead of 33. More economical at 90 than trundling around the lanes i think. Can't get a direct comparison with previous running as the roads down here are full of slow traffic and generally too twisty to get by. Not the empty A701 thats for sure.
Seem to be getting a surge when i lift off to change gear, just as i lift the accelerator and the clutch is going down it pulls slightly. Not sure what thats all about, can't remember it from before.

First decent run out yesterday, 450 mile round trip to basingstoke along A30/A303/M3. Does not seem as rapid as it used to be, does not destroy the 90-120 like it used to. Still fairly quick through gears and sometimes quicker then others if i catch it right, but seem to be having to work harder. Sat nav gave top end as 134 at indicated 138/9.

Booked in at Star 4th Jan to run it on the dyno to see if the horses are still there. Didn't want to run it on a different dyno to make sure i'm comparing like with like. Cornwall to Dysart? Checking up on the house we haven't sold yet so while i'm up there...
Have been running Vpower diesel for the last 3 tankfuls. Can't tell if the fuel economy is better as the kind of driving i'm doing is very variable at the moment varying between back lanes and motorway. Engine feels better for it though, not dramatically different but seems sharper.
Smoke still there when pootling and under acceleration until its good and and hot. Is using oil which it never did before, keeping some records to see whats happening. I think the smoke is diesel smoke, if it was burning oil i would have thought the smoke would be constant. Must be going somewhere though. Hope theres a easy answer, i really don't want to start with Heathrow Engines again

Star dyno says we are down to 180hp and a completely different shape to the curve. Jim reckons from computer readings MAF may be dodgy , so will clean it, clean connectors, and if that doesn't work do an exchange MAF. Turbo appears to be working fine. Averaged 87 from Tewkesbury to Falmouth on the way back so it ain't dead yet.
Still using oil, no noticeable smoke or leak. I am wondering if wrong grade was put in at last service as it used none in 2k miles between rebuild and service, now needing topped up every 800 or so.

been following the thread with interest, informative write up. Cant imagine what sort of miles you do...

after 4 years of coupe quattro ownership i now have an A4 180 tdi QS, curious are you going to Jim @ Star for your remap? I have contact him already and he does get good reviews across the board. I have used upsolute for previous cars who have been good and cheaper. But on grounds that A Star have a good recommendation and B are localish to me i am erring towards them... But Ii agree i would like to see some of the sub 1800 grunt improve, if it is possible...

on the oil front as well, mine has been on long life which does make me nervious, 20k for a change seems totally nuts. i would prefer to change much more frequently, but not sure i should switch oils on a 75k engine.

Jim did not do the remap, but i have been to Star for things like cam belt replacement, he put the car back together after i got the engine rebuilt, and dyno testing. I wish i had gone to him in the first place but made in hindsight a poor decision to use a local agent for Turbochip who could not offer any back up. I had to travel a 100 miles or so to Star when i was in Moffat and think its worth it, if i was as local as you i wouldn't hesitate.

The Turbochip makes an undoubted improvement below 1800rpm, but as i said last year sometime, its not whats claimed at the top end and Turbochip are not interested in sorting it out. I have not looked closely at Jims power/torque curves as i am too broke at the moment to consider replacing the turbochip with one of his remaps (please will someone buy my house in Moffat). I did look at the curve from Chipped UK as above but he's never come back to me about that low down lack of torque. Even with the Turbochip the engine is never going to be as lively off the mark as a 1,9 because the turbo is so big and will not spin up as quick, but once you're moving torque rules. Twin turbos...dream on. My wifes 1.9 would probably leave me up to maybe 60 or so but after that bye bye, and it is so easy to drive past people in top, drop to 4th or 5th for fun.

I went for long life servicing as i was doing 40000 miles a year. I am now returning to standard 10000 miles service as the driving i do is much shorter trips with much less cruising on empty roads and probably going to be down to maybe 20000 miles or so this year, less if i make more use of the FJ. I am also still unsure about the engine, the current oil usage rate being one reason why i want the car through the workshop on a regular basis. Unless you are doing say 30k or more miles a year personally i would go for the standard 10k interval.

cheers thanks for that. Will be a month or two away. Same sentiment as you i would rather pay a bit more and get the back up. No disrespect to upsolute, infact i quite like Simon there fine lad. Star having the RR to check things out and the solid Audi background kind of pin it down for me. I live about 30 miles west of Aberdeen, which for me is local-ish. My regular Audi indy garage is a 90 mile round trip so i dont mind traveling for the right sort of service.

I do about 16k a year but i suspect this may rise to about 20k this year as this will take over as being the long journeys family car now being more effienct and larger than the old coupe. Although we did take that to Bath last year with no problems. I think i full flush of the system and some Forte treatment before putting in new oil. a block feeder on my longlife serviced 1.8T a6 cost me a new turbo. so i have a touch of paranoia.

performance wise i dont mind losing out of the mark, although much as i hate it riding the clutch a little gives you a smoother start... i haven't been brave enough for a full Yuha Kanokonen full revs drop clutch start. i think the big tyres will stop that from happening and my fear of new dual mass flywheel costs put me off that idea.

but in standard form just now i cant decide whats quicker, the old coupe was definitely quicker of the mark, once moving, tough call, even i would say, however the handing is hugely improved.

    Angry

It is with trepidation that i report that i am going to go back to Heathrow Engines and reject their engine. Over the last 4281 miles it has consumed 5litres of oil, 900mls of coolant, become more difficult to start and continued to smoke in clouds. The midrange is significantly missing, even my wife commented how slow it feels when she drove it this weekend and she hasn't driven it for a good while. Even if the loss of torque proves to be something to do with a dodgy MAF/sensor/etc as yet untraced the oil consumption is pointing at a major problem somewhere.

    not good news.
i cant offer much to your current problem but perhaps a link here somewhere... i had mine remapped last week by upsolute. i spoke to Jim @ Star but for the lowdown punch i wanted he suggested a tuning box which i am just not a fan off, heard and seen some horrible things. So i went for the cheaper option.. and like you its not behaving. In fairness upsolute (Simon) is being very forthcoming in helping resolve the issue.

But we suspect the oil pump which i have heard from a few can be weak in the 180 2.5tdi's. I am hoping this is not the case, but i can feel on half throttle the car really does begin to surge forward with more punch but as soon as you plant it it doesn't pick up much more, you can feel it wants to but is being held back. Suspected the flywheel, but the DM flywheel went on our A6 2 years ago and its a different feel/ noise than that.

My choice at the moment is for a revised map using slightly less torque to see if that irons out the problem, vagcom not picking up anything at all. had a half wantder round the hoses but its very covered up to even see anything.

If you have any ideas i am all ears (eyes)...
... hope this maybe offers some clues to your issues. but even after researching it does seem the pump is pivotal in this engine. hoping to resolve as otherwise i feel its a good engine. I can get the work undone if i want and without hassle, but ideally would like to run remapped and well.

The latest news is that i have found a blog about Heathrow Engines packed full of even worse stories than mine. http://forums.invisionpower.com/inde...=207194&st=120

    Do not go near them.

I am afraid i do not understand why the oil pump performance would affect the engine performance as you describe.
The Turbochip let the engine rev freely, see my early posts, but seemed to also pack out the low down torque too. Not seen an upsolute curve, have you compared the before and after dyno curves? Has this aspect of the performance changed since the remap or was it like this before? Changed the air filter recently? My "oh yes its had a full service when it came into the garage" sales pitch turned out to have a filter that was in sh1t order. You won't notice at low revs but when its trying to gobble 10,000 litres of air a minute it will make a difference. Blocked crankcase filter will cause back pressure in the sump but this normally throws other symptoms too. Having been through the remap process now, any remaps on any future cars will follow a careful review of the dyno curves, and i will invest the money in using the same dyno before and after any remap.
The symptoms you describe about no more power when you plant your foot is very similar to my current problem, and i suspect the MAF at present as its done about 70k miles. I am also suspicious of the temperature sensors but the temp gauges have always shown the engine running cool except at sustained 3 figure cruising.

Well it just keeps coming.... what a tale.... I really feel for you.

Just hope it all comes good for you. Can you still reject the engine even though its been in the car for a while?

jesus, i thought you were just unlucky... i am falling further now...

You are right, its not the oil pump but the fuel pump, the diagnostics picked up J399 the fuel injection pump, or i believe actually the fuel injection pump ECU. Also fell of my chair when i heard how much this will be don't expect to see any change from a grand for the pump only. However managed to source a local Bosch fuel injection specialist who can rebuild/ refurbish the existing unit for cheaper. However i have committed to neither yet as i want to raise this with Audi first. As a 4 year old car with 79k shouldn't have a 1000+ part failure... it might fall on deaf ears but as a long time audi owner i am least impressed with this car so far, i do hope that things improve once this is fixed..

Air filter, aye it came out after the place i bought it from had it "replaced" it was utterly filthy, read minging... fag buts, black as you like with dirt/ sand everything in it. So yeah i can believe that! I has a new filter in place. Now i am tempted to try the MAF first before embarking on the J399 resolution.

Not sure on this particular car, but do you know if disconnecting the MAF all together will help diagnose the situation? This worked for the 1.8T and on the older 2.8, the ECU jumps to reading the throttle sensor position and doses the air accordingly, or rather it did on the previous power plants.

Any outcome on your engine issues, or is this going to be the painful reading of you will have little/ no recourse? Wish you all the best in trying to resolve that...

hi mate, i am going to take my car back to Hypertech in Bonnybridge soon as i have also had my car recently re-mappped. the last time i took it there, Duncan spent ages checking the car over and i feel that i got good value for money. i got 4 runs for just under 50.

let me know when you want to go and we could meet up. the link to their site is: http://www.hypertechscotland.co.uk/ the garage is mainly for jap motors, but he has RR days for most clubs and can accomodate any car.

istoo - if you unplug the MAF and theres no difference to the engine performance then obviously the MAF is fooked. However the MAF will often fade away rather than die suddenly. You can easily remove the MAF and give it a thorough clean using a solvent cleaner. I use the brake cleaner sold in aerosol at Halfords, gets rid of all the crud that accumulates on the MAF internals without having to touch it. This can rejuvenate a MAF that is not working properly, if it doesnt make a difference it also indicates that the MAF is on the way out.
Your fuel pump should not fail after 79k, mine has done 186k and is fine (famous last words). Check the idiot proof stuff like fuel filters too before you go into the megabuck stuff. Fuel pump timing is also relatively straightforward to check and there are several posts on this forum wher people have found the timing to be quite a long way out but the engine still runs.
I am trying to decide at the moment whether to sell it, just keep adding a litre of oil every 850 miles, sue, or spend the money on whisky. Answers on a postcard

J45SON - sorry mate but lost in all the verbiage above is the fact that i moved to Falmouth in Cornwall last year so Bonnybridge is no longer as close. Glad you found a good place, if you are going tuning you need to keep using the same dyno before and after or the numbers are not consistent.

Fj, bet your bike has been more reliable than the car (my ZZR started on the button after sitting in the garden since September and it is 83 vintage with 85k on the clock). Your in Cornwall, its better weather than Moffat, sack the car, use the bike , take stock and start again....(unless of course its a quick fix).

Perhaps its easy to say if I am not involved but its an objective view...

Whiskey is a temporary fix but probably is consumed at the same rate per mile as oil and much more satisfying!

    Keep us up to date...

Just had an annual/10,000 mile service by those very nice people at Falmouth Garage in Penryn, who are a Skoda dealer. Listened very tolerantly to my tale of woe beforehand and have also replaced air filter, topped up all the brake power steering coolant fluids, used a flushing agent on the oil change, checked the temp gauge is working properly, used their version of the VAGCOM to find no fault codes (older Audis are more accessible with other VAG group systems apparently, newer ones less so), found some play in the front offside suspension bushes (after only 186k miles? i was robbed)(joke), told me theres 10k left in the discs and pads, played hunt the oil leak for some time after jet washing the engine, all for the princely sum of 177. This is about 60 cheaper than Truro Audi before you start adding all the bits. I added up my oil usage since the last service - i'd put in 8.75litres in. Just to be bloody awkward the car hadn't put the oil level light on in the last 1100 miles, so asked them to dip it before they dropped the oil. There was still 0.25-0.5 litre above the minimum mark. So after averaging around 850miles a litre it suddenly dropped to about 2000miles a litre. The only oil leak they could find was a drip off the tandem pump that is bolted on at the rear of the nearside cam cover, no way that is losing a litre every 850 miles. So its burning it. Recently its been more difficult to see the smoke as i have been travelling in daylight so i'm not sure how bad it is. However the performance has seemed a bit better over the last 1000miles or so, although the fuel economy has dropped off to about 30mpg.
So today i gave it a quick blip up to Scotland to see what difference the service has made (have to sweep up the leaves, fix the roof, point the garden wall, cut up fallen tree (PLEASE buy my house) at the still unsold house). Starting is better, fires up quicker without the need to crank it as before. I thought about cruising at 79mph to save diesel but that lasted about 20 miles. It's definitely performing better, pulls more than it was and is hinting at more power at the top end, although it is nowhere near destroying 90-120 as it used to. Bit crowded on the motorway today but after diverting to work and off to my nieces birthday party we settled down to 100 on the cruise control no problem and 135 on the sat nav once we got past the north west. Filled up at Carlisle after 450 miles or so, DIS gave 28.2, calc gives 30.0mpg, DIS 63mph. At last a better day.

BTW clear roads on the way back, cruise on at 85, averaged 76mph and 33.5mpg for 503 miles. But oh bugger had to put a litre of oil in after 850 miles.

But whats this? Good grief a letter from Heathrow Engines! What? Tell us which parts are defective so we can supply them or return the car to us so we can look further into it? Gasp. So, all I have to do is completely strip down the engine, tell you which bits are gone, and then you can tell me you didn't touch that bit. And if you think you're getting your sticky fingers on the car - i don't think so. Hmm need a cunning plan.

And theres me thinking i was unlucky to have a lift pump replaced after 180,000 miles on my allroad (maybe using 70% bio diesel had something to do with it), now on 191,000 and still uses no oil at all. you must be due for some good luck, you might aswell buy a lottery ticket and turn up to heathrow engines in ur shiny new R8.

R8? Hmm have decided i would like an RS6, but there again i would also like a Dicovery an FJ1300 and a 150hp outboard for my boat. Seeing as Taylor Wimpey seem to be struggling i may need to re earn my pension too. So not today then.

Well i decided to do nothing with Heathrow Engines for a variety of reasons and bought a boat instead. They are getting stuffed through the courts by plenty of people just now anyway. As my annual mileage has halved and is likely to drop further i decided it just wasn't worth the hassle and further expense. The car still goes quicker than most and is still enjoyable to drive. So is the boat. Fuel consumption since i came to Cornwall has averaged 31.6mpg which considering the amount of traffic i now have to cope with and way i am booting it around the lanes given half a chance is not bad.
Since the last post, the oil usage stuck around 850-1000miles per litre initially, but then over the last 4000miles has dropped to 1600-2000. Service is looming in 1500 miles or so, so as last time the further i drive the less the consumption. Maybe the oil is getting thicker, i really have no idea. I can now tell when the oil level is dropping to near minimum as the engine becomes more responsive and feels more torquey. I had wondered if there was a crankcase pressure problem forcing oil past the rings but there are no other symptoms. The only other thing i can think of is oil coming down the valve guides but the cloud of smoke i was getting in the morning has disappeared too. We'll have another conflab at service time and see if any other suggestions come up, but for the time being i'll just keep pouring the diesel in at one end (my record is 99.92 for a fill up....) and oil at the other.

Really?! The tank is 66 litres, so even empty you must have been paying 150 ppl odd? Or have I worked it out wrong?

i still haven't topped 60 litres in it EVEN running it to 0 miles left

fj nice write up once again, and a good diary to follow your tails of woe! seems the engine has tightened up a bit at least? Assume you managed to flog the house up north if you have bought a boat.. i also lost out a bit of work from TW, but it was cut throat stuff anyway, so gone but not missed! Maybe scored block? i have never had that problem there are some recommened cleaers for these run in with fuel type but i am always skeptical as hell about the,m.

mine, well much the same, love/hate relationship i have had with it from day one.

The most I have managed to get into the tank is about 74 litres, I regularly fill 70 - 72 litres. Once the warning light comes on you have 9 litres left, so I reckon on the range that gives me and ignore the 0 miles left indicator on the DIS. I have driven 25 miles with that on, admittedly getting a bit uneasy by the end.
I think the block could well be scored, I would not be atall surprised if HE did not replace rebore or repair the cylinder walls.
No we didn't sell the house up North yet, but there is a possible buyer on the scene now, causing 2 trips up there in the last 2 weeks. We used my wifes A4 as it does about 15mpg better and 2000 miles in a week that makes some difference on the wallet. The first trip was OK but i was missing my A6 on the second one, it really is that much better at the long haul stuff.
Boat? Spending the kids inheritance....well borrowing it for a while whilst the kids are still around to enjoy it with them. And i'll probably have to work away for a year or so to get the finances back on an even keel shortly. Watch out Dublin

i have an A6 avant as well, my only regret is its a petrol, FWD and ans SE... otherwise it is a bloody good family car, 1.8T (also remapped) and took it to inverness and back last week and averaged 38.2mpg, and i wasnt nursing it either... which is about the same as the 2.5tdi QS...

I used to think my coupe quattro was the best car i have ever owned, but slowly the A6 is filling that role. It does everything very well.

Also agreed i ran 15 miles when the DIS after 0, nearest petrol station is a good 10-15 miles from the house, got really nervous.

mine is much the same, some days i swear it goes like the flames, others not so much. i have noticed though that its pretty average to about 50, but above that its really moves, the smoothness does mask the speed well.

Interesting drive home in the rain last night. Now about 1200 miles after the service. no sign of the oil light and slightly better fuel economy. Coming out of a village onto a 3 lane bit, foot down in 4th out of the 30 limit, it took off so suddenly i nearly ran up the back of the car in front before moving out in to the middle lane to go up the hill. It then proceeded to teararse up the hill to 100 without any problem, back to the good old days. Needless to say big grin by the time i got home, it was pulling hard all the way. This morning it was back to not as good as it used to be. Never a dull moment eh? And by the way just after I took the job in Dublin to get the money in we get an offer on the house and it could be sold next week!

funny you say that i drove the other night took the B road route for a wee hoon. She felt quick, the low down torque is back! i am putting it down to 8C and very damp weather... its a terrible love/hate engine this.

.. good luck on the house sale, its pretty dead up hear as well i believe! Dublin better watch out, keep them reports coming...

The pump is good enough for 260-280Bhp, is the turbo wich cannot hold boost. I have seen a few 2.5 tdi quattros in europe wich had custom turbochargers and with over 250Bhp. I think tunners limit the torque so they dont have warranty problems. Me old a4 2.5 tdi quattro had a 3L block mated to AKE heads, over 240 Bhp with a PSI tunning box...but only 27Mpg ! Would keep up with m3's though ! I had the ECU remmaped and i did not like it at all, the box gave that neck snapping torque and would pull all the way to redline. I miss it alot, maybe i would get it back soon !

maybe so, but mine struggled to give out 210bhp and 400nm and ended up putting it back to spec. the inj pump went to Bosch for an overhaul and got the all clear. The turbo and pipework all got tested and held boost perfectly. Make of that what you will!

If you have anything, i would be interested to see these cars as i could find nothing after scouring the web for the best part of a year. there is very little in the way of information on this engine and tuning. Share some info i am sure it would be appreciated.
