The vibes have been largely cured by getting 4 wheel alignment done (not by Kwikfit - see thread on handling forum) and judder may be the brake pads needing done/ calipers need cleaning.

Re: 2.5TDi V6 quattro Sport 180hp Turbochip

I normally use Shell. I turned off the motorway at Preston to buy fuel yesterday but couldn't find a Shell station. I ended up at Sainsbury but I won't be there again. Althoughthe fuel was cheaper the fuel economy on motorway cruise is about 2.5mpg down and the top end performance is badly affected, it's really struggling above 100. So while I am not completely sold on all the advertising, I also found that my old Passat ran better and more economically on Shell than Esso, and it looks like you get what you pay for at the supermarket. I dare say that the BP equivalent is as good but as I'm collecting the points now and pass 3 Shell garages every day I think I 'll stick with it.

Re: 2.5TDi V6 quattro Sport 180hp Turbochip

Weeell now i've got all the wheels pointing forwards with new tyres and the temperature is up to around 14C and we've got Shell in the tank, the needle was pointing at 142 and the pedal was not on the floor when I ran out of room. Clear run home from the folks last week gave 215miles in 2hr40. Due a service next month, and it's only 8 weeks till we hit the autobahns....Wonder how fast she'll let me drive?

Re: 2.5TDi V6 quattro Sport 180hp Turbochip

Had another go at Turbochip yesterday to try for some power curves. I'm waiting for their "Technical Director " to get back in the country. Hopefully i'll get some data next week. Car is flying at the minute, the surge at 90+ is just grrrreat. It'll be low profile next week, the better half is taking her Mum to Devon in it so I am consigned to the A4 with less than half the horses. However have just been invited to drive Range Rover Sport at LandRover in July

Turbochip sent me some power curves for the old chip with a comment that the one i have has more power, which is a fat lot of good.
Planned adventures on the autobahns were not to be. However despite being slowed by the marital speed restrictor i still managed to get a speeding ticket and 90 euro spot fine from the french police whilst chasing the ferry departure at 154kmh (on my birthday too). Spent all the money i'd saved on diesel - 77p a litre anyone? Gordon Brown is costing me 14 a tankful compared to Europe, daylight bleedin robbery.

The dyno speaks

Car now has 159000 miles on, was given a long life service at 150000. Went to Star Performance yesterday to have a cambelt service (2 toothed belts, 2 rollers, water pump). They also fitted the 2 auxiliary belts. The very helpful guys also arranged for the new tyres I had bought to be fitted (see thread on handling forum) and then we ran the car on the dyno. (Total bill was 593).

Watching the car doing 85mph on the rollers while strapped down is , erm, interesting. Figures were disappointing in terms of peak numbers, some way off the numbers Turbochip quoted at the time of the upgrade (210bhp and 420Nm).

Turbochip quote pre-chip original figures of 184bhp@3900rpm, amd 370Nm@3250rpm. My figures are:
Peak engine power 195.5bhp/145.6kW@3960rpm (close to the 195bhp @ 4050rpm I was sent for the "old" chip), wheel power 135.5bhp (60 loss in transmission argh!!)
Peak torque 290lbf-ft/393Nm@2660rpm (well below even the "old" chip figure of 421Nm@2550rpm).

I have the chart scanned in and can email it if anyone wants it, i can't see how to insert it here.

Jim Curley reckoned the standard car should produce nearer to 190hp than 180 (the handbook figure works out at 177bhp), and that his chip produces 210hp . Torque of 310-320lbf-ft should be achievable, again this is what Turbochip claim. His concern over going further than this is that the diesel pump will fail, a 1200 problem.

I've contacted the Turbochip dealer that installed my chip, who said the quoted figures on the website were for brand new engines and mine would be less as it had done 159000 miles. I can understand that but i am only getting around 50% of the quoted increase figures. He said he would speak to HQ. I will be sending my data to HQ and asking for their comments.

So although the car became smoother and more driveable, with better pick up from idle, peak power & torque is not what is claimed. This probably why I am unable to significantly better the standard performance figures. The surge at around 2800rpm that I described above is not noticeable in the curves so I don't know what that is, but i enjoy it all the same. Out of interest, the trip back from Cornwall including a loop to Stratford, Cheltenham, Solihull, Stratford cross country, averaged 37mpg with the cruise pegged at 80mph. This is the best it's ever done. Average for the 50000miles to date is 33mpg. Nicely run in then......

Martin/Mike etc,
I have just joined this forum while searching for solutions to a current problem on the A4. Good to see guys close by - at least in the same country. My car is 1998 A4 2.5 TDi Quattro Avant just passed it's Mot yesterday after a few repairs. Now it's decided to throw white smoke out the exhaust hence why I am now searching the net.
I have the Elsawin software off ebay for the workshop manual and have the software for reading the fault codes and reseting them on the laptop-has come in useful so far. Especially trying to do it all myself. Anyway off to find more info on my problem. White smoke points more to water or mixture I would say. Not losing any water and dont think it would be oil via the turbo seals that would be darker smoke. Dont want to replace turbo at only 89,000 miles!

Thanks Martin,
I was leaning and hoping it was the EGR valve and that thread confirmed it. (I had even phoned GSF for a price on a new one but again Audi only part).
The thread confirmed exactly what is happening to mine. Think I might try and do the crankcase breather that they were on about as well. Just to be safe. At about the right mileage for it to be done methinks.
Thanks again.

Thumbs up

I have ordered the crankcase breather. It is actually the Oil Mist Seperator that fits into the Oil filter housing/casting. You would have thought the parts department would have know the bit I was after and had it in stock if this is a known problem. Anyway should be sorted once it arrives. Thanks for your help.

I have spoken to Turbochip and they are not very pleased or responsive. They said, amongst other things: that increasing the power does not make the car go faster it just improves acceleration; the mileage of my engine means that it would not be as efficient as a new engine and therefore not produce as much power. I have differing opinions but i'm not about to start a public row on here. They said that they would provide a remap but have not done so yet.

Following my trip to Awesome GTI to get the shocks replaced, and my successful attempt to win dickhead of the week award by putting 20litres of unleaded in the tank on the way there, i can report that due to Awesomes diligence the car now goes smoother than before. It had started to sound a tad agricultural and feel a bit coarse. However it transpired that the fuel pump timing was slightly out, and now corrected there is a noticeably smoother feel to the engine, and the tractor noises have receded. All this work meant that they had to work late on replacing the shocks and we didn't get on their rolling road.
There was around 15 litres of diesel still in the tank when i put the unleaded in (10 years of dieseling, still can't believe i did this ) and i drove 100 miles from Carlisle to Bolton before the warning lights started flashing and the engine started missing. Both the pump in the fuel tank and the injection pump had stopped working, i assume they had been degreased by the petrol. A faulty connection on the fuel tank pump was replaced and it worked almost immediately when diesel was put in the tank. After liberal doses of diesel and several hours work the injection pump started again. Big thanks to Awesome.
Anyone want to expalin how i managed to drive 100 miles before the problem occurred?

No record speeds but have just driven from Moffat to Munich, sat nav 993 miles average speed 77mph (except the ferry, a tasty 28mph), clear motorways, blue sky loud tunes sunshine 200hp to play with some days its just good to be alive. This car has 169000 miles on but the way it just destroys the 90 to 120 bracket, and just pulls and pulls for hours on end is just grrreat. Click the cruise on at 120? Who needs to buy a new one?

Unhappy

AAIIEEEE!!!! Oil warning light nasty noise from under bonnet oil level still at full oil temperature gauge at cold. Beat this for having a bad day:
Wifes 50th birthday so we had a row to celebrate it. Went to my aunties funeral and found my dad wasn't there he had been rushed into hospital with dislocated hip and on the way home my car broke and the AA took from 9pm until 3am to get from Middlesborough to Moffat.
Car was re-recovered to Audi CArlisle and i await the (bad) news.

Bad news is crankwheel (Audis words not mine) that drives oil pump has stripped teeth and there is swarf in sump. They have not stripped it further and don't know why it happened.

Hysterical news is they want 7500 to replace the engine (short engine 2500 2 heads at 1300, 18 hours labour, parts)

Better news is my dad has had his hip put back

If anyone would like to recommend a specialist in Southern Scotland who can be trusted to replace or repair my engine I am all ears.

Ach crivens the engine and turbo are fooked (financial term meaning your bank account savings and credit facility are all about to disappear).
Oh and just to put the lid on it the FJ failed for the first time in 18 years of ownership last Thursday, leaving me on the hard shoulder in the torrential rain with what, after waiting 2 hours for recovery (good old AA.....got the location wrong AGAIN, sent a van not truck AGAIN ), turned out to be a fried battery. Ever thought someone was trying to tell you it was time to give up driving?
I have a thread on the tech talk forum about oil pump failure on V6TDI, this is apparently not entirely unknown and from what i have been told its generally terminal. Still don't know what causes it.
I have just bought a 38000 mile AKE engine and turbo from Heathrow engines who will truck it up to Star and take the remains of the dead engine back when the swap is complete. That cost 3961 but i will get 700 back when they get the old engine back. 12000 mile / 12 month warranty. Quality remains to be seen.

No details of purchase or delivery sent as promised so phoned Jim on Friday to see if engine had arrived at Star as promised - nope. Phoned Heathrow Engine Centre - engine not left yet. Cut a long garbled story short it appears they dropped the engine and broke the sump. Said I didn't want an engine that had been dropped, either give me another one or money back. They said they were getting another from Liverpool, allegedly 25k miles. Asked for an email (again) with full details of original engine and the one from Liverpool. Spent Friday night watching Shrek 3 and persuading myself not to drive up from Falmouth (we have almost finished moving) to London overnight to doorstep them Saturday morning.
Phoned on Saturday and got passed from pillar to post, eventually told that second engine was being dispatched to Star but no paperwork had arrived from Liverpool so I'll get an email on Monday. Confidence is now rock bottom why me? Going back to Scotland tomorrow to plug battery back into FJ and hope it works.

Still no definite news on delivery or details of the engine, like its' number for a start. To my surprise it would appear there are AKE engine sprouting up all over the place. The engine is now apparently one with only 9000 miles on it (hope he hasn't dropped the decimal point) which alternately makes me happy and worried. If I get a 9k mile engine - whoopee its hardly run in sounds like a bargain; if its 90k well ok its half what was on the original; if it's that new its only got 9k on it is it a later version of the AKE engine and won't match up with the rest of the car?? Anyone know the manufacturing history of the AKE engine and if it was progressively modified or not?
If all this pans out and it really is a 9000 mile engine we'll slap it on the dyno before leaving and find out if the Turbochip assertions about the chip not producing the claimed 210hp because I had a high mileage engine are true.

The FJ fired up and whizzed 99% of the way to work this morning in the pishing rain, then faltered at the end of the road to the office and wouldn't restart. Of course its a Glasgow holiday today so all the bike shops are shut, so after a bit of phoning around it was off to Paisley and a new battery has been dropped in. The old one was making 2 amps so don't know if its fooked or there is a problem elsewhere thats draining it.

I'd be so bored if I didn't have all this to do as well as work and moving

I'm so sharp i'll cut myself. A later version of the AKE? Have i got second sight? The 9000 mile engine is a BAU engine not the AKE I need and he sent it before I could stop him, so we are about to find out what the difference is. Dooh! The "technical manager" said it would fit, under questioning admitted he hadn't carried out such a swap, but he had swapped AKE and AKN engines so was sure it would fit ok. Aaaargh! So if that 180hp car you were sold isn't as quick as you thought it would be....

I strongly suspect he'll be getting it back shortly. Audi UK said that the engine management systems will be incompatible, Audi Glasgow said that the gearbox and exhaust may not be the same.

Oh and the first engine wasn't dropped, it cracked the sump in the accident that wrote off the donor car so they thought that they had better not sell it to me in case something else was broken. And AKE engines are now back to being as common as hobby horse droppings, I've been all over the net like a rash looking for one without any joy.

The new battery didn't cure the FJ, another half mile push up the hard shoulder this morning until it bump started. The Doc at the FJ owners club reckons the alternator/rectifier unit is goosed which i was beginning to suspect. I'd be depressed if I wasn't so hysterical.

The BAU engine is different so its going back on a lorry. And it didn't have a turbo on it. When TNT delivered it Friday, they had no means of unloading it so came back Monday on a small lorry. The misfit was diagnosed in an hour or so, phoned Heathrow, TNT lorry turns up Tuesday to pick it up- normal sized truck, no means of loading. Lorry goes away again. Beginning to get resigned to this kind of event. Hire car bill now off the scale, overdraft at the limit.
Have had 2 other offers of AKE engines now but have given Heathrow a week to give me an AKE like I've paid for or a refund. Another engine is promised for this Friday. There is also a possible recon option that Jim has put me on to. Have been offered £2k for car without engine.

FJ alternator is baggered, yet another AA recovery in the middle of the night. Phoned the owners club, next morning received a secondhand alternator, put it on, it works - i'm mobile. Is there a moral in here somewhere?

Some light relief.......or not

FTAO Andy

I have been given your name by Harry your technical manager as the person to speak to regarding refunds.

I have now lost confidence in your companys ability to supply the engine I need, and I want my money back. I have telephoned 4 times today including the call to Harry, and have been told variously that you were in later, not in, or dealing with customers.

The history of this order is mostly set out below in the chain of previous emails. The first Audi AKE engine you were going to sell me proved to have a broken sump. Jeffrey initially told me it had been dropped so I said I did not want an engine that had been that damaged in case other things were broken. Harry subsequently told me it had been damaged in the accident that the donor car had been in, and shared my opinion of the possible damage. The second engine, which you actually sent me, was not the right type (it was a BAU engine), and you can see below I questioned this at the time and tried to stop it being sent. The engine was delivered, did not fit and has been returned. On 17th July I said please send the correct engine within a week or give me a refund. After a series of telephone calls and difficulties getting the engine re-palleted and collected, I was told another engine, this time an AKE engine, was being sent on 1st August. I phoned on Friday twice and left messages asking for details of the engine I was being sent and a new receipt for it. No one has called back and nothing has come in the post. So I tried to get hold of Jeffrey today but have been told he is off. I was passed to Harry who advised me that he does not have an engine for me. He had one last week which he was going to send me but it was fitted to a car at your workshop instead. This was despite me being repeatedly assured you were sending me the engine.

I have now been struggling with your company for nearly 6 weeks and have nothing to show for it despite having paid you in full at the time of order. During this time I have had to turn down offers of other engines as you have my money and I cannot afford to fund two engines, and your guys have repeatedly assured me an engine was being supplied. I have also incurred substantial hire car bills of which it would be fair to say approximately 450 of which are due to the delays caused by your failure to supply the engine.

I trust that we can sort this out without further delay. Please contact me today so we can arrange for the refund to be credited to my account immediately.

FTAO Jeffrey/Harry
I confirm that the BAU engine has been collected from Star Performance and, further to my conversation with Harry, yesterday that an Audi AKE engine c/w turbo is being sent to Star Performance today.
As previously requested please will you send me a new receipt for this engine, together with details of its age, mileage and engine number.

FTAO Harry/Jeffrey

The engine you dispatched has arrived today at Star Performance. I confirm my phone conversation of 1.30 today with Jeffrey that the engine you supplied is the wrong engine for my car, and furthermore does not have a turbo on it as you confirmed it would.. The engine is not the one described on the receipt you have sent me. Therefore please make immediate arrangements to collect the engine from Star.
As I confirmed below, if you are unable to provide the correct engine within a week of today then I wish to have my money refunded so I can buy an engine elsewhere.

FTAO Harry/Jeffrey

I confirm our conversation of 5pm this afternoon that the BAU engine has already been dispatched from your source in Liverpool. I also confirm that you have not actually fitted a BAU engine into an AKE car before and therefore are not 100% sure that this works, and that should it not work you will take it back at no cost to myself. I am therefore asking my garage to accept the engine on my behalf on this basis.

If the engine does not match my car then, if you are unable to supply and AKE engine within 1 week of me advising you that the BAU engine does not fit, I wish to have my money back so I can buy an engine elsewhere.

FTAO Jeffrey

Audi UK tell me that unless the engine management system comes with the engine the engine will not run. The electronic system that drives the AKE engine is not the same as that which drives the BAU engine.
Given this information, and that received from Audi Glasgow, I do not want the BAU engine, I want an AKE engine as I originally ordered and paid for.

After I spoke to you I spoke to my garage (Star Performance) who are an independent Audi specialist, and Audi Glasgow. Neither of them can confirm that this BAU engine will fit into my car. Audi Glasgow thinks that the exhaust and gearbox connection may be different and recommended that I should only put an AKE engine back in. Please can you get Harry to call me asap. I have already called to speak to him but he is out.

Jeffrey
I am pleasantly surprised that you have managed to get an engine with only 9,000 miles on it, it must be pretty new. As you know mine is a 2001 51 plate car, so I hope there have not been design modifications in the time between my engine and the one you have found. Do you know what car the engine has come out of?
When I placed the order you will recall that you confirmed that the engine you were originally supplying was complete with turbo. Please confirm that this engine also comes complete with turbo.
I urgently need confirmation of the delivery date so the garage fitting the engine knows when it is coming.

The engine is going to be rebuilt with a new top end and I got a cheque back for £587 quid this morning which hopefully is not a rubber one. Engine is being collected Friday for return a week later. And no I am not taking bets on how long it will actually be.

As i said i wasn't taking bets on how long it would be. Another series of broken promises on when they were picking it up and doing the work. But HOLD THE FRONT PAGE the reconditioned engine has returned Star - but still need to get the turbo reconditioned/rebuilt. I have repeatedly asked for a list of all the new parts that were fitted but not received anything. In the mean time my FJ has gone through a set of tyres, an oil cooler, new sprockets and a 4000 mile service. Spent a happy weekend taking it almost completely to bits and reassembling it.

I am up to star tomorrow.. I may see your car there.. and seriously... I have a zzr1100 sitting in my garage that hasn't been anywhere for ages. If you need a loan bike after all this hassle, PM me or call me at Star. I am seeing Jim at 08:30 Thursday....

Sorry i have only just seen this. Thats a very generous offer, thanks. The FJ is fine at the moment and i have been quite enjoying spannering away on it. My ham fisted mechanic rating is now down to premium sliced bacon as i have almost caught up with a couple of years of neglect. I am busy scrubbing in some new rubber and tuning my suspension. You ought to have been out on your ZZR it should have been getting seriously spanked over the last few dry Scottish weeks.
Did you see my car? Jim must be sick to death of it by now. Either that or its rusting gently into the car park. While all this has been going on i have been trying to complete on a house in Falmouth by remote control, and the amount of buggeration we are getting from the vendor makes me think she must be related to those Heathrow guys. Living in interesting times, i reckon its that old Chinese curse.

Well all went well at Star and the aircon is back working. Brian really knows his stuff. I think your car is in the workshop though I didn't see it we had a good old blether about it all.. Jim had a wry grin about it to be honest.. though he did say that he hopes to get it sorted before he is away on holiday so hopefully its not too long before you get it back, turbo permitting.

I used to have a FJ12 too, before the ZZR. I think I did 65k miles with very little trouble. Did an 18" rear wheel conversion and a few other things. Loved it, great for Euro tours... Just hoovered miles. The zzr is up to 80k now and still does an indicated 170..owned it since 1993 so we are old mates. Maybe a zzr14 in the new year...offer still stands if you get stuck by the way...

Down your way Friday on an out and back to the lakes... let us know how you get on and hope it gets sorted soon.

Mine... doing the passes out of Cortina in Italy

And the wife's daily driver...the day the build was finished, Cumbria.

A wry grin? Thats him thinking of the cheque i'll be giving him that'll pay for his holiday. To be fair he's been extremely good about the whole thing, i've been lucky there.
Had the FJ since 1989, but its only up to about 64k, mostly in big lumps with long gaps between. Lots of minor mods, currently considering buying another in bits to build a more modified version. The guy that runs the owners club is racing an FJ11 which he's got to about 148bhp now. See http://www.fjracer.com/. Idly wondering what he can do with an FJ12 and a wad of cash.
Regards to the A701 where I assume you'll be going enroute to the Lakes, sadly missed since I started working in Glasgow. Theres half a chance i'll be over at Macmerry for a week soon so i might be lucky and get off this boring M74 which squares off my tyres.
Your wife has her own bike she rides on a daily basis? You are a lucky man. Tidy job on the XT btw

After a brief chat with Jim this morning i am having a clutch kit , all the drive belts and crankcase filter changed while everything is in bits. Turned down doing the flywheel. Anybody got any "must do's" before it all goes back together again?

Well the turbo arrived back on Monday after another delivery cock up, is there no end to this, Jim was looking to fit it this week. We'll find out if she's a runner shortly.
