Unleaded in my oil burner!??? Oooops

Yep I did it. I put Ł25 worth of unleaded in my diesel. But it doesnt end there....
I was in such a panic I decided to start driving it ???
100 yards later it cut out.

Has anyone done this ? RAC say they cant just drain them anymore, they have to take it to a main dealer to be flushed.

Any ideas how much this is gonna cost me?

    Its a '02 A6 1.9 TD Redi

    Thanks
(i told rac the missus did it..... i know i shouldnt of)

Very sad to hear Tom, I put diesel in my golf GTI once, its a horrible feeling.

The worst thing you can do is run it after filling with petrol, if you didnt start your car all you would of needed to do is drain your fuel tank, but in your case the garage may need to clean your system and replace the filters.

Diesel is less harsh than petrol so the pipes and sensors do not need to be as durable as the parts used on petrol engines, so any plastic pipes which may of been damaged by the petrol might also need to be changed.

If your car is out of warranty I would suggest contacting a bosch or lucas diesel specialist, not the dealer as they are a lot dearer and wont be as familiar with cars filled up with the wrong fuel.

The biggest problem is that diesel has lubricating abilities, and petrol has solvent properties and its possible that the petrol has cleaned away the lubricating diesel, therefore damaging the injector pump. PS This is worse case scenario, hopefully a few filters and a flush and you are in business again

Not to panic you mate, but I only saw a advert from the RAC last night saying what ever you do if you put petrol in your diesel do not drive it as it cost around 3,000 to put write????

    Anyone else seen that add?

In our co car fleet, this is a disturbingly regular occurence.

Recent costs to resolve have included:

Rover 25 2.0sdi - about Ł50, simple flush, refuel, no more problem

Rover 45 2.0sdi about Ł180, flush, filters, flush again

Audi A4 1.9tdi (Not mine!) about Ł250, not sure what they did, but returned it working

Saab 2.0tdi - about Ł700!!! again, not sure what was done exactly, but several parts replaced

all of these went to the appropriate main dealer for fixing

    Thanks for your replies guys.....

It got sent to Audi today, thansk to RAC.
They say it will be Ł346 + Vat.

They also have to fill it up with 'special' diesel so thats extra. Not as bad as I thought it would be anyway

Is that like the "Special" washer fluid they put in which is more expensive than Optimax during an oil shortage?

    tfox,

You should be able to find a garage that can solve your problem for about Ł90 not the amount you have been quoted.

Putting petrol in your diesel tank is not too much of a problem unless your tank was empty. Before the petrol stations started to sell anti waxing diesel, people used to add about 5 - 10% petrol to stop the diesel waxing during sub zero conditions.
Someone I know filled her diesel Focus up with petrol, she was having a blonde moment, the car drove although the engine knocked quite a bit. I ended up towing her to a garage and they charged Ł80 to drain the tank, put in about Ł5 of diesel and added injector cleaner. The car was fine after that.

If you have a PD engine you are potentially looking at a new pump ŁŁŁŁ
