Takes time to start

got a R 1999 tdi 110

just takes time to start! any ideas have to hold the ignition on for atleast 4-5 seconds then the car starts fine and runs fine!

I had the same problem with my '97 TDI 110. It needed several turns of the key to start, gradually getting worse and worse until I was afraid it wouldn't start at all. A new start motor cured it.
Now my '00 TDI 115 is going the way same......

if its the original battery i would try the battery first.

In both cases with my two cars there has been plenty of 'juice' in the batteries.
Fitting a new starter motor has completely cured the problem on one car; I haven't got around to it on the other yet but will do so within the next week or so.
