PASSAT TDI PD ONLY 23MPG

PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP?
I HAVE A VW PASSAT 1.9TDI PD 115 AUTO WHICH IS 5 YEARS OLD WITH 120K MILES AND I HAVE HAD IT ABOUT 2 MONTHS. AROUND TOWN (SHORT SCHOOL RUNS) I GET AN AVERAGE OF 23 MPG AND ON A MOTORWAY TRIP ABOUT 40 MPG WHICH I HAVE CHECKED AND NOT JUST RELIED ON THE TRIP COMPUTER. IT HAS HAD A RECENT NEW MAFF & AIR FILTER WHICH RECTIFIED A POWER LOSS PROBLEM BUT SURELY THE MPG CANNOT BE RIGHT.
ANY SUGGESTIONS (WOULD A NEW TUNIT CHIP HELP)?

Hi Dave, firt of all, Welcome to the Forum Good idea to type with the capslock off, as it comes out like you're shoutting
With regards to your car, 23mpg is really poor, even for an auto. My Passat Tdi 115 (manual, FVWSH and 100K on the clock) acheives around 45mpg on 70-80mph motorway runs, and never dips below 30 mpg around town, despite my enthusiastic driving. Average fuel consumption from brim to brim figures was around 36mpg per tank, but this has gone upto 40 mpg ave. since having a tunit box fitted and added performance. I think you better get it checked out.

Re: PASSAT TDI PD ONLY 23MPG

Thanks for that info - I took it to a local vw specialist this afternoon who chip read it and found no problems so they have booked it in for thursday to look at the advance/retard - whatever that is.
I would still welcome any comments from anyone who has had this problem, in-case they still cant find the cause at the garage.
If it is fixed I will post the results.

Advance/retard is the timing, did it have a timing/cam belt fitted lately?

Yes it had a timing belt fitted a week ago, not at the VW dealer though, and no it does not smoke at all - it runs beautifully.

Re: PASSAT TDI PD ONLY 23MPG

<<<agrees with jojo, the belt could be a tooth out, which wants checking. They usually smoke slightly more if the timing is marginally out. I've had three Passat Tdi's- an X plate 115Tdi, a 52 plate 130Pd and now running a 2005 130 Pd Highline with cruise and sports suspension upgrade. Every one i've had from new has burnt a fair bit of oil over the first 10k miles or so, and economy on each also improved after 10k or 15k miles. I usually average about 42/43 mpg combined urban/extra urban driving. I don't nail it everywhere, but don't hang about too much either. I drive at or around the speed limit, but don't waste time getting there. I usually sit on major A roads and Motorways at about 85mph (without prejudice)On a decent run if i stick the cruise on at 75mph it returns about 50-52mpg. If i hammer it around the country lanes... that's HAMMER it, i get about 32-34mpg.I use the car for my work, and it's an absolute pleasure to drive. I always arrive at my destination relaxed and smiling. I think the round town consumption figures your getting seem a bit poor... I considered a steptronic, or whatever hey call them now...but the cost was an extra 1200/1400 or so. The emmissions were considerably higher, which put it in a higher tax bracket, and fuel consumption figures on paper showed about 5-10% less economy. So, I'd have paid about an extra 30 per month over and above what i already pay in company car tax, because of the list value, and over the year would have spent about another 600-800 on fuel. I'd expect an auto to return maybe a minimum of 34/36+ mpg on average, regards. Paul
