Simple question - Servicing - what do they check?

So I'm not as clued in as I should be on what happens during a car service.

I know that they check oil, coolant levels etc but do they check the brakes and brake pads? I've had my A3 (125kW quattro) since September 2008 and haven't seen any mention of having brake pads replaced (despite some heavy use in the past). Is that normal?
