Hi guys/gals

Your advice would be greatly appreciated...

Ive done something I've never done before and aside from feeling extremely stupid im a little concerned about what ive done to my cars paint work. Ive never hit about car in the 8 years ive been driving and its really caught me off guard, feeling like the biggest plonker EVER

I was backing of my drive way during the week (on my way to the doctors, so head is in a shed) and i lightly bumped into a landscape gardeners transit van. Its was my fault despite his inconciderate parking and im prepared to take the damage on the chin and pay up for the damage (funnily enough not damage to the transit and no one was in the van at the time) So im gonna have to pay for the damage to my car.

At first i though it was just a scuff on the bumper but after washing the car this weekend and attempting to repair the damage myself (Ive fixed the scuff with Meguires Scratch-X) ive notice a strange crack in the paint.

I can only assume that as the rear bumper has flexed the paint has cracked! The damage is about 10-15cm long and is a very fine line of tiny little cracks.

My questions are: Is this BAD damage? How much is it likely to cost to cost? Will the car need blending as its just the plastic bumper? and should i really be getting this work done through audi concidering the car is only a month old.

Many thanks from a rather embarrassed new car owner.

Sorry to hear this :(

Personally, I would take it to Audi/VAG repair shop. Get them to quote, then go to a non specialist. Gain a quote off that bodyshop (which will be considerably lower than VAG shop) and go back to Audi.

VAG appear to be desperate for work at the moment and my spot of painting was reduced considerably by tellig them I was not going to book it in because of much lower quotes.

I will not hazzard a guess at the cost of the repair, purely because they range so massively!

Hope this helps,

Jamie

Bumper shouldn't need blending, as they're off from the bodywork from factory.
Unless the actual plastic is cracked, I wouldn't say it's bad damage at all. Infact, you were (un)lucky.
What I think will happen is the damaged area will be sanded down and sprayed, blended out into the original paint & the whole bumper will be re lacquered.

Thanks for the replys guys, spoke to a mate who sells used prestege cars who has recommended a guy who does body work on high value cars and high work is supposed to be top notch. They have used him for years and swear by him, when asked about the white they mention he did some repair work on a new white porsche and the repair was practically invisble.

Scott, funny you should mention the bumpers being a different colour... i only noticed this weekend when washing the car for the first time that the front bumper, rear bumper and spoiler are a slightly different colour!

Presumably the same issue that Renault have with the Clio, in that those parts are made of plastic and therefore reflect the light in a different manner.

I think so, you dont notice most of the time but when the car was completely clean and wet there is a very slight difference.

All sound advice above. Modern plastic panels are painted away from the main production line and fitted to the car during the latter stages of the build; a degree of colour variation is therefore quite common these days, even though identical paints and spraying techniques are used (the primer surface is quite different though). Whether this is right or not on cars costing small fortunes is another question!
