Car wash swirls

I have a black car with good 'ol car wash swirls that look awful in the sun (previous owner, obviously!)

I know products say they can get rid of this sort of stuff, but I assume its a temporary thing? As in, when you wash it again you have to re-apply? Is there anything to deal with it permanently?
