    Multiple layers of Wax?

    I've used the Blackfire Wet Diamond sealant on my black A3 and I'm now adding the finish using the Midnight Sun Ivory carnauba wax as the final layer. Is it worth adding several layers of the wax, and if so, how long in between applying the coats?

    its always worth building up layers of wax as this builds up protection. i think the norm is 24hours. think this is whats refferred too as spit roasting............er sorry i mean 'spit shining'

    If you really have to multilayer, then as Chris says, normally 24 hours. Just make sure surface is very clean before doing so, or you will just introduce swirls. Either wash car again, if kept outside and freshly contaminated, or prep each panel with some quick detailer spray if in garage.

    I've once applied 2 coats of Collinite 476 for extra protection but had to do it in the same 5 hour detail. I'd normally use the Z wax with its natural oils and such, but 476 contains different solvents which can affect the first coat of wax if you layer it on top so soon. Spit shining is the act of spraying the first coat of wax with refridgerated QD spray or equivalent, then layering the second coat on top of this. The cold QD spray then acts as a barrier between the two coats. Buff the second layer of wax without dissolving or hazing the first!

    The term apparently originated in the area of Army boot perfection if I remember, where the idea was to get several layers on to the boots for max shine. Hence actual spitting in between to prevent each new layer affecting each underlying layer. This is very apt in the case of 476 because it actually smells like shoe polish rather than a natural oiled proper carnauba wax.

    Check the Blackfire product info on PB's site just to check what the score is with the BF though.

    If you are in no hurry to multilayer then prob just apply a new layer after a proper wash and dry say every 6-8 weeks or so.

    Thanks for the advice....I tried adding a second layer to the top half on one of the doors as an experiment( and before reading JR's post)...I assumed that having been overnight in the garage, a quick wipe over with a clean microfibre polishing cloth to remove dust would be safe. No, ended up with some swirls (brilliant black is very easy to mark isn't it?)

    So it is back to square one with that panel this morning as it will need another run over with a soft pad on the UDM polisher......

    Sorry to hear that. At least it's only one panel. Yes, always use a QD spray and preferrably plush MF cloths.

    Soft woollen dusters are great for dusting down without leaving marring or worse. We use the Zymol ones, but they are a tad expensive, and I dare say if you look around you'll find other comparable ones. As for the layering, I would try to get 3-4 coats on in the first month, then ease back to topping up every 2 months or so thereafter until the time comes to clay/polish again.
