polishing/buffing pads for polishers???

looking into buying a different polisher for my car as i dont like my twin handled one much its to bulky.

anyways before i buy one i wanna make sure i can fit the different pads that i will be buying for appling the wax and polishing it off.

how exactly is it the pads fit onto the polishes then?? as the polisher i am looking at on ebay says it uses 180mm hook and loop backed discs???
 
180mm or 6" backing plates with hook n loop (i.e. velcro) fittings are the commonest size for use with polishing pads like these...

Buying a machine with the option to switch to a smaller backing plate (3.5") is a good idea, as then you can use spot pads to get into tight areas or treat specific defects. See here for spot pads...

All of the above pads and backing plates will work with the commonest dual action machines, i.e. the Porter Cable 7424 and Ultimate Detailing Machine. What machine have you seen on E-Bay?
 
yea i looked at the pc myself on ebay an there was a package for £150 i think but still a bit pricey if its only being used on my car and not for business.

when you have it could u possibly tell me if the pads are fixed by velcro??

and also if the backing plate is removable to accept a smaller pad like a 4"??

If you guys have never done machine polishing before, I think it is pretty advisable not to use the Silverline as it is a rotary, and these build up a lot of heat very quickly and can ruin your paintwork very FAST! I think if you are going to use it you should get a couple of scrap panels to try it out on first!

I think thats why the PC is so popular. It is an random orbital polisher and pretty much fool proof!

I could be wrong, so somebody will correct me if I am! So if you get your polisher before some in the know posts, I would hold of putting it on your prize possesion!

Okay, that is indeed a rotary polisher, and I would not recommend buying one unless you have a heap of time on your hands to learn to use it properly on scrap panels before tackling your own car. They are great tools, but have the potential to damage paint very quickly if not used correctly. Dual action machines on the other hand are novice proof. I seriously advise you take the time to read this guide to polishing, as it explains all about machine choices...

Hook and loop is the US term for Velcro attachments, so yes, any 6.5" velcro backed pad will fit the machine shown, and it will also accept smaller backing plates, but not the ones we sell. Rotary polishers use an M14 male thread, while all the plates we sell are for dual action units, which use a 5/16 x24 female thread. I would seriously advise you consider either a Porter Cable or an Ultimate Detailing Machine; yes they are dearer, but nowhere near as expensive as a full panel respray if you get things wrong. :)
 
Hi thanks for the information.

I have had good reads through all the excellent guides you have put up and have been using them for a while. Thought I would take it to the next level with a machine polisher. I read the differences between the two and understand that over zealous polisher will 'burn' into the car with the rotary polisher.

Unfortunatley I am the spontaneous type so went and ordered what was 'instock for next day delivery'. With hindsight and a further read (especially about the current $$ rate) I should have saved the money for the PC!

Still I am in a quandry now, do I try the rotary one or get my money back and go for the PC? I have quite a few serious scratches (cats, prams, hedgerows) that I want to get out.

Rotaries are good if you have the time and inclination to learn to use them properly... and you should work on scrap panels until confident. For a PC and all the pads, etc, expect to pay around $200, which equates to £100 given the current exchange rate (plus £20-30 for shipping). However, you will then need a 110V site transformer and new plug, which will cost you another £40. See here for the best current dual action polisher on the market, the Ultimate Detailing Machine, which has more corrective power than the PC...

The choice between a dual action machine and rotary isn't easy. Rotaries do more work and give better results for sure on harder paints, but learning them isn't easy, and mistakes can be expensive. The decision is yours!
 
thaanks for all the extra info buys.....think ime goin off the idea of a rotory now as dont wanna have any expensive mistakes.

had a look about on ebay and found this little deal......lot more money than the rotory but if it saves having bad mistakes its worth it i guess.

also once i get my polisher i have a nice first project which is my mums ming blue a3 which some little F***ERS decided to key all the way from the wing to rear quarter........from some of the scratches ive seen got out with polishers ime sure i can get this one out. will post some pics up later on tonight when ime at my mums.
 
change of plan ime not going to buy that polisher as the seller seems a little dodgey to me as they have sold a fair few of them "get 1000 positive feedback in 1 day" kind of things and i dont like the look of it.

been having a look around and cant seem to find anything on the porter cable 7424 .the ultimate detailing machine i can only find available in 110v and the 240v version is not getting released until 2008??? is this right??

The PC 7424 has recently been superceded by the Ultimate Detailing Machine (UDM), more info on which can be viewed here - http://www.autopia-carcare.com/udm-1000-na.html. The UDM is a clone of the PC, but with noticeable improvements. It is currently available in the US as a 110V model, but is set to be released in the UK sometime next spring as a 240V CE certified model (we will be stocking it, and offering it along with pads and polishes in bundles). We have tested a prototype of the UDM, and it is way better than the PC in terms of corrective power, and much more suited to harder germanic paints; my advice is to either buy a 110V US version now and use it as you would a PC (i.e. with a 110V site transformer after changing the plug), or hang on until next spring and get the UK UDM when it comes out.

Okay, you can never say for certain from photos, but my gut tells me that the keyed scratch down the side should come out fully, providing there is enough paint to work with (it would be worth getting some readings taken before battering away at it - that said, by dual action machine it'll take a while with spot pads to correct). The scratch on the bumper looks deeper, and I wouldn't expect to fully remove that by PC (well, not without a bit of wetsanding first, which again, you'd need paint readings for). The clarity issue on your car looks like fine orange peel to me (which is not uncommon on Audi paint), and if this is the case then only hard machine polishing will improve it. However, it could also be down to marring from previous hand polishing attempts. Menzerna 106FA on a CCS polishing pad may be enough to correct the (fine) swirls and marring (if that's what it is - can't tell for dure from the pics), but there is always a chance that Menzerna RD3.02 on a CCS light cut might be needed (and it will certainly be needed if it is fine orange peel that is causing the clarity problem). If you ended up needing RD3.02, it would be worth following up with Menzerna 85RD on a CCS polishing pad to refine the finish to maximum gloss and reflectiveness. I certainly think you'd see a major improvement in the paint by using a UDM and the Menzerna polishes. :)
