Electric Garage Doors - recommendations?

I have a Horman Promatic (i think its german). It came supplied with my sectional garage which was from Hansons which is somewhere in Yorkshire. Took me a day to fit and programme the remotes in. Works a treat tho and have since noticed they are a popular brand.

Mines an autodoor elite no problems in 7 years.I went to look at a property recently that was built in the mid 70s and they had the same electric garage door lifter albeit an older model and it worked perfectly so can testify to reliability.A company that specialises in them is a firm called garador.

I've got a Hormann electric garage door and can't praise it highly enough.
They do electric motors that you can retro-fit to your existing door eg up-and-over conventional types but as my old door was falling apart just went for a complete new sectional roller-shutter one.
I did look at a few other makes prior to settling for the Hormann (it was a few years ago and can only remember Novomatic and Henderson) but think it was the right choice as it's been fantastic!

We are moving house, and the "new" (not brand new) house has a double garage. The doors are quite old, with big gaps top and bottom and not very secure if you ask me. So was looking at sectional doors, both for security and for draft exculsion.

I know the automation units can be fitted DIY. But what about the complete door units etc. Any experience?

My sectional door has a big rubber seal at the bottom, and the Hormann blurb reckoned the motor and arm are locked in position when the door is shut, so preventing anybody from jemmying it open..........
It is totally draught and water-proof and I'm very happy with the degree of security it offers. You can get a manual handle and latch fitted to the door but I chose not to have one fitted, the only way to open it is with the remote.(In the event of the motor failing there is a keyhole at the top of the door to allow access to the emergency motor disconnect wire).
Being sectional you can also park vehicles to within an inch or two of the door and still be able to get into the garage, try doing that with an up and over door!
It was fitted in one day,well within the capability of a good DIY-er as it came with a thick installation manual ;in the 3 years its been fitted the only thing thats been replaced has been the battery in the remote!

I too had a roll up one fitted from Garador. It was oversize to a standard, as I made use of the extra width of having one side behind the wall (an A6 is a big car for modern house garages!) It was fitted in a day by the professionals I am not as young as I used to be, but even so, it was very definitely a two man job, getting the roll onto the mechanism.
It closes tight to the floor. Locks into "teeth" at the top to prevent forcing up and is inulated within the slats.
It cost me £1300, but the ability to open it as I come down the road and drive straight in is well worth it!
