    VW GOLF mk3 2.8 VR6

    Ive had 1, and i know of a few others on this forum that have too...But what do you really think of (IMO);
Volkswagens 1st effort at a big engine'd hot hatch..

p.s. we all know the corrado was a complete flop in its day,but now the favourite of many.

Always wanted one from the day they we're released, not too sure now, they are old skool and not such a hothatch by todays standards. They we're the benchmark FWD hatch in it's time.

    Benchmarked against what jojo?

Overweight, ill-handling, understeering Golfs that came after it?

The VR6 Golf is a pig...a big lumbering pig of a thing that only wants to plough straight on despite frantic winding on of steering lock...
And that engine in a Mk2, or heaven forbid, a Mk1 is even worse.

The Mk3 16v GTI was a probably a quicker car point to point on the twisty stuff...certainly I've not come accross a VR6 that'll get close to my 16v on the track / twisties.

The VR6 is a masterpiece however...sounds incredible...pity it's specific output is poor, it doesn't rev well and it has cooling 'issues'.
It's not stopped me from building a high-spec 2.9 though...
Which will no doubt work it's way into mk Mk3 GTi...go figure?

TBH that's my take on the VR6 Golf too. I worked at a dealer for a few months in the 90's and so looked forward to my first drive of one.

    Oh dear............................

But I guess they're still cool, because of that badge.

OK, maybe not benchmark, more like badge... everyone wanted a VR6, cos it sounded cool and went pretty well in a straight line, how it handled just didn't matter.

    Ahh..
The evidence would suggest the Chav Chariot is the one on the left in this picture, would it not?

Aye yer no far wrong there Ess, by the look of how close he parked to the building (To many beers!) and the Crack thats appeared above the wing mirror of the golf and runs straight up, I'd say he's tried chaving it up himself....

That was my pride and joy (sold it in December).

The Golf VR6 was the first true prestige hot hatch in my opinion, and since a lot of us here drive A3s, we should be grateful!

Not brilliant but still an important car.

Overweight, prone to failure as the miles pile on and not as well built as it should have been.

    I'd still have one though.

I had one. Worst car I've ever had. It didn't handle, was slow and worse of all it was red. To make it better, in my infinate wisdom, I lowered it with a set of Jamex springs and shocks which proceeded to f**k it right up ! Later found it was slow due to a shot airmeter. Sold it in the end to a right chav who reckoned it was the best car he'd ever driven.
Said then that I'd never have another Golf. So here I am with a MkV GTi !

the engine is too big and heavy and permanently fels like a handful. Engine gets too hot, pops hoses and eventually destroys itslef. Wiring and components deteriorate prematurely due to heat. Gearing all wrong to be a fun car to drive.

not much of a hot hatch, more of a lazyboy.

Still a nice car, though Corrado was better. Only because it actually handled properly.

    I had two. Both black.
The first one I had is to this day the only car where I was stopped to ask where I got it. Twice. (OK, it was 1995!)
Classy. Fast in it's day. Great soundtrack. Understeer city.

    Definitely cool.

Yea I have to agree with most of these comments although some are a bit harsh.
I had one of these, A 97 black 3 door highline; with modded throttle body, air box restricter removed and milteck cat back exhaust.
What a sound track. From there I moved onto a 98 Impreza STI V5 with gems ecu, various ind and exhaust mods putting out a reliable 320 brake. But I always thought I wish I could have the interior comfort of the highline with the performance of the scooby.
Mabey I need to get a syncro VR6 and turbo or supercharge it?

Had 3 VR6's, 5dr MK3, Jetta VR6 in south africa aka Vento in UK I believe & 3dr Highline Mk3, torque steer was fair bit, but fun to drive nonetheless, my highline was that beautiful metallic purple colour, looked great in the sun lol

    Boring if you ask me

Raced a friend of mine who had one in a 2.0T A3 that i had as a courtesy car

The Audi won, so the extra 2 pistons in the VW are doing feck all
Currently driving a 55 plate Ford Mondeo ST. But as Arnie once said...

And this is coming from a person who drives a Mondeo ST?!

That's a stupid statement as the VR6 was released nearly 20 years ago now compared to a modern turbo engine.

Give me a burbling 6 pot over a dull sounding F/I 4 cylinder anyday.

BTW I have had a Corrado VR6 and a MK5 Golf GTI so I think I'm qualified to make that statement!

    a mk3 vr6 is geared totally differently to Audi/ mk 4 4mo etc so will be quicker to 60 as you only need 2nd gear,not 3rd .

Great sounding engine, but too heavy over the nose, a 16v would run rings round one through the twisty stuff. Was loking at them as an option for my ex but ended with a normal Mk3 GTi

Great engine but never liked the 5-door version. A mint 3-door VR6 Highline in Metallic Mulberry would be my choice to have.

Love mine. Owned it 10 years. Bloody thing just won't die. :D

When you compare the engine spec these days to other cars it is pretty lame. Back in the day though these engines were the Don.

my mum had a healthy Vr6 in indian red is it? the car had tonnes of paper work and a few little engine mods etc, apparently it was chipped but never had any proof of this and don't know if its doable on those cars, but Jesus in a straight line it used to shift, was defiantly not standard. All my pals as I was 16 at the time used to think my mum was well cool. Just a shame that when I passed my test I had a silver mk3 1.4, I used to get ripped by my mum lol

The only decent thing about mk 3 Golfs was the introduction of this engine
