100 2.8 v6 avant broke

hi i have a audi 100 2.8 v6 24 valve avant quttro on a K plate and the cam belt has just gone it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif has done 178000 miles and i would like to know if you think it will of bent any valves as i dont know much about audi's and i hope you all know more than i do i would also like to know if it would have done any more damage to the engine when it broke

More than likely the Bottom end will be OK but the top end may be damaged, I've heard of cases that there's no damage - but then again that was at low speed and the driver switched off immediately and didn't try to restart If you've done that then you may get off lightly (Fingers crossed!!) Failing that you may have bent some valves and at worst damaged the seats on the heads meaning new heads, but the only way to find out is to remove the heads, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TRY TURNING THE ENGINE OVER, this will result in further damage..

You won't get much change out of £500 notes, in fact it may be more (hopefully not!!) but my 735 required head work and the standard guy wanted ...wait for it ...£735 + vat interestingly same price as the engine size don't ya think?? Eventually got it done for £450 all inclusive..

Two alternatives are...

A secondhand engine with less miles...OR

New heads ...

Only you'll know what to do and what you can afford, but hopefully you get back on the road soon as it is a nice car to drive... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

hi hopeful i will get off as i was just changing in to second and at the time the car wis in nutral doing about 10mph and the engin was turned of straght away so hopefuly it might ve alright

i've know blokes who were able to fit a new cambelt and simply drive off! and others who were idling when the belt snapped and had damage to both valves and pistons!
two big extremes. get a specialist auto engineering shop to have a listen/look without removing the heads, if they are skilled enough they will be able to tell just from turning the camshaft over, and testing compressions. just make sure a new belt is on before they try this.

Had to go and tow a friend recently about 500km (they were driving back from Cape Town when their cambelt snapped), Once they were back they took the car to the engineering shop who fitted a new belt and tensioner for them and told them to be on their merry way...
Turned out it was the tensioner that had siezed causing the belt to go. luckily no internal damage.

just had a man try and fix it and it no good it is only running on 3 cylders so know i need a new engine has any one got a 2.8 v6 24v going spare

does the uk have any engineering shops that trade your motor for a recon unit?

you may also find that only the heads need to be fixed?
