noisy tappets

i've got a audi 80 2.6 quattro, 1993, 90k on the clock, when she's been left to sleep overnight and i start her in the morning the tappets rattle for a second or so then it sounds really sweet, this can't be normal and is it doing any further damage? I've just read in "Audi Driver" about the same problem on someone elses car and he had been told it's the oil check valves, are these easy to replace?

I think it is just the hydraulic tappets charging. My old Golf used to do the same for about 10s or so 1st thing in the morning. I think it is a sign of old age, but nobody advised changing them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
