Fuel gauge not working correctly A6 2.5TDI

A mate has a problem with this fuel gauge on his 2.5tdi 5 cylinder. It reads correct sometimes then it just stops reading and the fuel warning is displayed when there is plenty of fuel in the tank. Changed dash and still the same problem.

any info or areas to check.

would check the earth on the sensor attached to the tank it will cause this
