Hello all

I'm new to this site, and following a recent service, I've been told I need 4 new tyres!

My 1996 2.0 E coupe has rather tired standard alloys. I think that if I'm going to pay for 4 new tyres I might just get alloys at the same time.

I'm not bothered about getting brand new ones, I just need guidance on what size to get. I think the standard alloys are 15", so I would go up to either 16" or 17". Could someone tell me the size I should be looking for? (no rude jokes!!).

I've never bought alloys separately before, so are there other measurements than the circumference (i.e. the depth?) that I need to look out for?

Any advice welcome.

Thanks, Dinibird.

Hi

I have 7" x 17" alloys on my coupe with 225/45 17" tyres. My car is also lowered a lot yet I have no problems with clearance/rubbing.
Your car has probably 205/60 15 tyres? If so, you would need 225/45 17 or maybe 215's to keep the correct rolling radius, if this is significantly different, you end up with gearing and speedo problems. I guess for 16", you would need 50 or 55 series tyres for this reason. Suggest you do a bit of googling and find a tyre size calculator, for comparing other sizes to your originals.
One other thing, your wheels are ET 37mm (offset) you need wheels close to this (2-3mm either way would be ok) any more and you will start affecting the steering. Talking of which, wider low profile tyres do tend to follow any lines in the road, I like the benefits enough to put up with this, but choose 16's with 55 series to reduce this effect.

Thanks for that Scotty

After having a look on the gallery here, I saw a lovely cabrio with the RS4 alloys on, 17". I think I may look into those ones.

I go to a good Audi specialist garage, and the old boy there always has time for me, so I'll ask him if he would fit them if I got them off ebay.

Thanks again for the advice.

I'm thinking now of getting clear repeaters as mine is cricket green - would update it somewhat!

Dini.
