Audi 100 Oil Light at 3000rpm

    Hi,

This is a question about my dads '91 Audi 100 Avant Turbo. When you hit 3000 rpm the oil light (picture of oil can dripping on computer) comes on and beeps. It used to do this at about 4500rpm so he didnt care because he didnt need to rev it that far.

The oil level is fine and the oil pressure guage is also sitting close to the max where it always has done.

Any ideas what causes this as he's worried something will be damaged?

From memory it sits between 4-5 bar. I'll check with him though. Its certainly not depreciated since he's owned the car, which is since it was a year old!

It happens regardless of oil temperature.

Generally speaking, VW/Audi's use 2 oil pressure switches, the lower setting one
works up to approx 2500 revs and goes off below approx 0.9 bar. Above approx 2500 revs, the higher pressure switch needs to see approx 1.8bar.
If the car has good oil pressure but is alarming above 2500 revs, I would guess that the high pressure switch is faulty.
I'm not sure of the exact engine speeds
and pressures, but that's roughly how it works.
You might find the 1.8 bar switch low down on the left side of the block, in front of the dipstick tube. It has white plastic.

    Thanks Scotty, I'll investigate this.
