Thread: ## Remap Day @ Chipped UK - 10/02/2008 - £250 ##

Right Guys,

Had a couple of you last time come along to this. Had some very good results.

Basically you get a before run on the rollers. A Custom remap and after on the rollers for £250 all in or £35 for a rolling road session.

If you have any doubts I'm sure Byzan_A4 could put your mind at rest. We took his 1.8T from around 140hp to 200hp.

Ive been contemplating a remap, and this price seems very reasonable. Just need to clarify some specifics to see if its worth me doing it on my car please.

A3 1.8T Treg prefacelift model, only mods are facelift lights and new style RS4 18" reps on.

Ive noticed with the new alloys on the car is a tad slower, no doubt the price of paying for reps rather than OEM, and from upgrading to 18"s but I need to keep the car pratical so not planning to put it on a diet stripping rear seats spare wheels etc, nor have I got alot of cash to blow on expensive light weight wheels etc, you get what you pay for....
questions are really around the benifits and any cons to remapping?

as I understand it, remapping will tweak the engine ECU into running more efficiently? ie it thinks theres more cold air in there and hence you get more a performance increase? otherwise how else can you gain bhp without using more fuel?

If so, it should be around 50-60bhp gain, but do you have any stats on the increase in fuel economy? I know this will depend on how most people drive, but Im getting about 26mpg average, and 280miles on a full tank roughly. Seems a bit low, but maybe thats just my heavy right foot... if I did a remap will it increase that by much? will I really see at least a 50bhp increase?
should I not bother if the car is standard, and consider other mods first before a map?

There are no real Cons, the car is only tuned to within it’s limits. You can obviously get things like Clutches, Turbo’s and intercooolers going pop if they are in a bad condition at the time of a remap, but all in good working order then they will be fine.

I think you are thinking of the resistor things you buy off ebay. A remap, advances the ignition, ups the boost on the turbo, etc, making the car run more efficiantly

Unless you are planning on FMIC, bigger turbo, Cams etc then have then No .We normally quote 40-50 hp (different cars yield different results) and you shouldn’t see a drop in fuel economy and in most cases you should see an improvement. With 50-60 hp you may see a drop as this is quite aggressice. We can offer you an economy remap where you should see a 3-5 mpg improvement, but all this depends on how you drive.

Again I can’t gaurentee your MPG will improve (most do though) because if you have a heavy right foot, then it’s hard to say, but if you cruise on the motorway at around 70 then you will see an improvement. As for Life span, the car is only tuned to within it’s limits, the on issues you may have is if something like the Clutch, turbo, intercooler as already worn/on their way out, this may be highlighted aft the remap.

For £20 I would say so, but we will run diags on the car if required before the Remap

hmmm Fuel economy remap doesnt seem worth it for only 3-5mpg, and if I was that bothered about economy and not performance I would of bought a diesel anyway I spose.
Its that fine balance I think im trying to achieve... £250 does seem a nice price for around 190bhp, and with the added bonus of a potential mpg increase... I spose its just one of those things that would be nice to have but not essential... ill have a think, see if I can bring myself to splash out and give it a go.
It would be nice, if I do get an increase in mpg, that then pays for the remap... then its worth doing. Easy justification then

If for example you find issues with the car and advise against the remap, I take it id get my money back? or will it still cost say £35 to find that out?

Also dont suppose you know off the top of your head what the insurance tends to go up by for a remap? ie most companys say £20 for suspension on your premium, £20 for wheels etc, obviously depending on what they are.

I you drive nice a easy most of the time and only use the power everynow and again, you will see an improvement, but if you redline in every gear you've got little chance, but on a run MPG will be better.

Insurance varies, depends on who they are. If there are major issue, you will just need to pay for the Run, but It would have to be very serious for us not to do the map. If it just a sensor you can have map done and change the sensor when you get the chance. The only prblem with this is you might not get the correct reading on the Dyno runs.

Mark will be back soon, he is probably still at chipped UK HQ

i recon you should see a good solid 40- 45 bhp and an increase in drivealibity/ Aslo probably an increase in economy, well worth it IMHO
